Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the graph, identifying the overall upward trend and noting the highest and lowest countries. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. The description of the data is often imprecise, such as 'USA journey start from early 1970%', which is factually confusing, and the reporting of specific data points is occasionally inaccurate or lacks clarity. While the main trends are identified, the comparison between countries is limited, and the summary of the 'projected future' is not clearly distinguished from past data. To improve, ensure that data points are cited accurately and that the distinction between past, current, and future trends is explicitly stated.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is hindered by awkward phrasing and a lack of cohesive devices. Transitions between sentences are often abrupt, such as the jump from the USA to England and then to Spain. The use of linking words is limited and sometimes repetitive or misused, for example, 'Whereas' and 'While' are used to start sentences without a clear contrast being established. The referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the nine countries mentioned in the prompt versus the few actually discussed in the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive, relying on basic descriptors like 'significant', 'substantial', and 'huge'. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'currantly' (currently), 'fiture' (future), and 'experinced' (experienced), which suggest spelling issues. The phrase 'USA kept it peak' is grammatically and lexically incorrect. While the student attempts to describe trends, the lack of precision in terminology (e.g., 'huge down and upward') limits the ability to convey information effectively. A wider range of precise vocabulary for describing trends—such as 'fluctuated', 'plateaued', or 'surged'—would improve the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'USA journey start' instead of 'started', and incorrect preposition usage, such as 'from early 1970% around by 45%'. Sentence structures are generally simple, and attempts at more complex sentences often result in errors, such as 'Whereas France and Korean remained at the lowest point comparison to other countries.' Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the placement of percentages and the use of commas. A greater focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for tense consistency is required.
