Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graph illustrates the overweight rates among nine countries, both currently and in the projected future.
Overall, all countries experienced an increase in their overweight rates over the whole period. The USA remained at the highest level from the beginning to the end, whereas Korea and France remained lower than the other countries.
The USA's journey started in the early 1970s at around 45%, then fell slightly to approximately 43% before rising steadily to around 75% by 2020. England also experienced a substantial increase, from roughly 48% in 1990 to 70% by 2020. Spain showed an overall upward trend, although its rate fluctuated during the period, eventually reaching approximately 57%. Canada also experienced some fluctuations before rising gradually to around 57% by 2020.
On the other hand, Austria remained relatively low compared with the other countries. Australia showed a gradual increase but remained below the highest figures. Italy also experienced some fluctuations. Whereas France and Korea remained among the countries with the lowest overweight rates, both showed a gradual increase towards the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main features and trends of the graph. The overview clearly highlights the general upward trend and identifies the countries at the extremes, such as the USA, France, and Korea. You have made relevant comparisons throughout the response. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that all data points mentioned are accurate and that the 'projected future' aspect is explicitly addressed, as the prompt mentions future rates, but your analysis focuses primarily on the historical data up to 2020. Including more specific data comparisons between the countries would further strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information effectively. You use cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'on the other hand', and 'although' to link ideas. The progression of information is easy to follow. To improve, ensure that the transition between paragraphs is smoother and that you avoid repetitive sentence structures. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences could be more tightly linked to the previous ones to enhance the flow of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'remained at the highest level', 'substantial increase', and 'fluctuated during the period' are appropriate for a task of this nature. However, the vocabulary is somewhat functional and lacks the more sophisticated, precise collocations that would elevate the response to a higher band. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'increase' or 'fluctuate' and use more precise adverbs to describe the trends, such as 'sharply' or 'marginally'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is good. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice constructions or more advanced conditional or participial phrases. For example, instead of 'The USA's journey started...', you could use 'Starting at approximately 45% in the early 1970s, the USA's rate...'.
