Summarise the infonnation by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given line graph compares past, current, and predicted proportions of overweight people in nine selected OECD countries between 1970 and 2020.
Overall, it is crystal clear that overweight rates are expected to increase in all countries over the period. The USA records the highest proportions throughout the graph and projected to remain the most overweight nation by the end of the graph. By contrast, Korea has the lowest overweight rate, despite a steady increase. Among the remaining countries, Canada is forecast to experience one of the most noticeable rises.
At a fleeting glance, in the USA, the proportion of overweight people stood at approximately 45%. After a slight decline to around 43% by the end of that decade, the figure rose steadily, reaching about 60% in 2000 and is predicted to climb further to roughly 75% by 2020. Canada followed a similar upward trend, inclining from around 45% in the early 1990s to nearly about 58% in 2000 before being projected to approach 70% by the end of the year.
Moving further, the remaining countries also experienced upward trend. England and Spain are expected to soar to 65% and 55% respectively by 2020. Austria and Italy remained at intermediate levels, ending the period at 46% and 45%, while Australia is projected to reach 45%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all key features of the graph, including the overall trend and specific data points for the nine countries. You successfully identified the USA as the highest and Korea as the lowest, while noting the general upward trajectory. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the main trends. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurate; for instance, you mentioned Canada started in the early 1990s, but the graph shows data points starting earlier. Additionally, ensure that comparisons are made more consistently across all groups rather than listing them individually in the final paragraph.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the general trends from the specific data analysis. Cohesive devices such as 'By contrast', 'Moving further', and 'After a slight decline' are used appropriately to guide the reader. However, the transition between the final paragraph and the rest of the text could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision, using terms like 'projected', 'intermediate levels', and 'upward trend'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'at a fleeting glance' (which is slightly informal for an academic report) and 'nearly about' (which is redundant). However, the vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task and allows for clear communication of the data. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoiding redundant modifiers.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The USA records the highest proportions throughout the graph and projected to remain the most overweight nation'. There are a few grammatical slips, such as the missing auxiliary verb in 'and [is] projected to remain' and the awkward phrasing 'by the end of the year' (when referring to the year 2020 in a long-term projection). Despite these minor errors, the meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. The control of grammar is sufficient to support the communication of the data.
