Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The rendered line graph depicts the information about past and current overweight rates, as well as a projected future overweight rate in nine selected countries. The data has been calibrated into percentage.
Overall, it is crystal clear that the past and projected future overweight rates in selected countries was highest in United States of America however the lowest proportion of overweight was in Korea.
At a glance, the percentage in United States of America was around 42% in year 1980. Moreover, the proportion of overweight people stood at approximately 45%. After a slight decline to around 43% by the end of that decade, the figure rose steadily, reaching about 60% in 2000 and is predicted to climb further to roughly 75% by 2020. Canada followed a similar upward trend, inclining from around 45% in the early 1990 to nearly about 58% in 2000 before being projected to approach 70% by the end of the year.
Moving further, the remaining countries also experienced upward trend. England and Spain are expected to soar to 65% and 55% respectively by 2020. Austria and Italy remained at intermediate levels, ending the period at 46% and 45%, while Australia is projected to be reached to 45%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the graph and provided a clear overview. You selected relevant data points to support your descriptions, such as the trends for the USA and Canada. However, the task requires a more comprehensive comparison across all nine countries. While you mentioned several, the grouping of the remaining countries was somewhat rushed, and you missed the opportunity to contrast the specific trajectories of all categories more effectively. To improve, ensure that every country mentioned in the prompt is clearly accounted for in your analysis, rather than grouping them too broadly at the end.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'After a slight decline', and 'Moving further' to guide the reader through the data. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the final paragraph is a bit weak. For instance, 'the remaining countries also experienced upward trend' lacks a specific link to the data provided. Improving the variety of your linking phrases and ensuring each sentence flows naturally from the previous one will help you achieve a higher band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information, using terms like 'calibrated', 'proportion', 'steadily', and 'intermediate levels'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'inclining from' (which is less standard than 'increasing from' or 'rising from') and 'projected to be reached to' (which is grammatically incorrect). To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations for describing trends and avoid redundant phrasing like 'nearly about', which is contradictory.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'the past and projected future overweight rates... was highest' contains a subject-verb agreement error (should be 'were'). Additionally, 'in year 1980' is missing an article ('in the year 1980'), and 'projected to be reached to' is an awkward passive construction. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage to improve accuracy.
