Summarise the infonnation by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The line graph illustrates the trends in overweight rates for nine selected OECD countries between 1970 and 2020, along with projections for the future.
Overall, the proportion of overweight individuals has shown a consistent upward trend in all nine countries throughout the period. While there are variations in the starting points and the pace of growth, every nation is projected to experience a further increase in these rates by 2020.
In 1970, the USA had the highest rate of overweight individuals at approximately 45%, while Korea had the lowest, starting well below 20%. Over the following decades, the USA remained the country with the highest percentage, reaching nearly 70% by 2020. Conversely, although Korea experienced a significant increase, it maintained the lowest rate among the selected countries, remaining under 40% by the end of the projection.
Other countries, such as England, Spain, Canada, Austria, Australia, Italy, and France, followed a similar growth pattern. By the early 2000s, most of these nations saw their overweight rates climb into the 40% to 50% range. Projections indicate that by 2020, almost all these countries will have surpassed or closely approached the 50% mark, with the gaps between the different nations narrowing over time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the trends and successfully selected key features, such as the USA's leading position and Korea's lower starting point. The comparisons between countries are well-integrated, and the data is used accurately to support the summary. The inclusion of the projected data is handled well, demonstrating a good understanding of the graph's scope. To reach a higher band, you could ensure that the specific data points for the 'other' countries are slightly more detailed, perhaps by grouping them more explicitly or highlighting a specific outlier among that group to add depth to the analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the introduction, the overall trend, the specific extremes (USA and Korea), and the remaining group. Cohesive devices such as 'Conversely', 'while', and 'although' are used effectively to link ideas and show contrast. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information flows smoothly from one point to the next. The use of referencing is clear, and the structure allows the reader to follow the comparison of data points without confusion. The response is well-structured and easy to read.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information precisely. Phrases like 'consistent upward trend', 'pace of growth', and 'surpassed or closely approached' demonstrate a good level of lexical control. The vocabulary is appropriate for an academic report and is used accurately throughout. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation. To improve further, you could incorporate more sophisticated synonyms for 'increase' or 'growth' to avoid repetition, and perhaps use more precise terminology when describing the narrowing gaps between the data sets.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response demonstrates a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('While there are variations...', 'although Korea experienced...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly to support the flow of information. There is a high level of grammatical control throughout the text. The use of tenses is appropriate for describing both past trends and future projections. The writing is clear and professional, with no errors that impede communication. The control over complex sentence forms is consistent and accurate.
