Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given line graph encases information about overweight rates in present and past including probable future rates in nine chosen geographical reasons. From an overall perspective, it is evident that the most flexible country in this case is Korea in all time with USA having the strictest rules upon overweight.

in 1970, USA charged rates 45% of proportion overweight, although it went down in 1980, the overall trend is increasing towards 75% at the end of research duration.

The sideways trend of Austria portray that it stayed much stable as compared to Australia and England where an increase of about 40-30% was seen.

In contrary to the trends of previously mentioned countries, most countries showed less surge but more fluctuations such as France whose overweight rates only increased up to 15% however there were many little fluctuations through the period of time. Same as France, Spain had a relevant pattern. The only country with the least proportion rates stayed as Korea where only a high from 25% to 35% changed the prices.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response identifies the main trends and makes some comparisons, but the analysis is hindered by significant inaccuracies in data interpretation. For instance, describing Korea as having 'flexible' rates or the USA as having 'strictest rules' is confusing and does not accurately reflect the data on overweight percentages. The description of the trends is often vague, and the attempt to summarize the information lacks precision. While the response covers the main features, the misinterpretation of the graph's purpose (treating it as a policy issue rather than a health statistic) prevents a higher score. More focus on specific data points and clear, objective reporting is required to meet the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused, such as 'In contrary to' (should be 'In contrast to') and 'Same as France'. The transition between ideas is sometimes abrupt, and the referencing is occasionally unclear. While there is an attempt to group information, the lack of clear, logical links between sentences makes the overall flow feel disjointed. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear focus would significantly enhance the coherence of the writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and frequently inaccurate. Words are often used in contexts where they do not fit, such as 'flexible' to describe a country's overweight rate, 'strictest rules' instead of 'highest rates', and 'changed the prices' when referring to percentages. These errors demonstrate a lack of control over appropriate terminology for describing data. While the student attempts to use some descriptive language, the misuse of terms often impedes the clarity of the message. To improve, the student should focus on learning specific collocations for describing trends, such as 'significant increase', 'fluctuated', or 'remained stable'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally cause confusion. Examples include 'USA charged rates 45% of proportion overweight' and 'The sideways trend of Austria portray that it stayed much stable'. Subject-verb agreement issues and incorrect preposition usage are common. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of errors is high enough to distract the reader. The student needs to focus on basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and the correct use of comparative structures to improve accuracy and range.
