Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The line graph demonstrates the past and current overweight rates, as well as projected future overweight rates in nine chosen countries from time period of 1970 to 2020.
Overall, all these nine countries include USA, Austria, England, Spain, Canada, Italy, France, Australia and Korea. There is a visible steady growth in overweight rates. The highest rate is for the USA and the least is for the Korea. Moreover, the Australia faced a sudden rise and it increased rapidly at a steady rate.
After 1970, the USA overweight growth rate declined for 2-3 percent. For the England it was under 50% and then went on rising. The Canada joined in between [redacted phone] and declined first from 50% and then increased. Strategy was not the same for the Spain, it began before 1990 and climbed up steadily. The four regions including the Austria, Australia, Italy and France started under 40% in years between [redacted phone] and increased. The Korea is late among these all as its initial stages were in late 1990s. Moreover, the rates were below 30% for it.
In 2020, the growth of the USA reached to 75% and the England hardly touched 70% by 2020. The Australia made a high progress and reached above 60% while, the Canada and the Spain remained under 60% however, the Canada will maintain its rate after 2020. Furthermore, the Austria, Italy and France climbed above 40%. Since, the Korea is below 40% still.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
You have identified the main trends and provided data points for the countries mentioned. However, the response lacks a clear, analytical overview. You have listed the countries in the body rather than grouping them logically, and the description of the trends is somewhat repetitive and lacks precision. For example, stating 'the USA overweight growth rate declined for 2-3 percent' is vague and does not accurately reflect the visual data. To improve, focus on grouping countries with similar trajectories (e.g., those with high vs. low rates) and ensure your comparisons are more precise. You have addressed the task, but the lack of a clear summary and the inconsistent use of data points prevent a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The second paragraph lists countries unnecessarily, and the transition between sentences is often mechanical. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'Furthermore', but they are sometimes used to link unrelated ideas. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'The four regions including the Austria, Australia, Italy and France', which is confusing as these are countries, not regions. Improving the flow between sentences and using a wider variety of cohesive devices would help the reader follow your analysis more effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'steady growth', 'declined', and 'climbed up'. However, there are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'The Korea is late among these all' and 'The Australia made a high progress'. Additionally, there is an overuse of the definite article 'the' before country names (e.g., 'the USA', 'the England', 'the Canada'), which is grammatically incorrect for most of these nations. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and correcting these common collocation errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. The misuse of articles is a persistent issue throughout the text (e.g., 'the Australia', 'the Korea'). There are also errors in verb tense and preposition usage, such as 'reached to 75%' (should be 'reached 75%') and 'Since, the Korea is below 40% still'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to distract the reader. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly improve your accuracy.
