Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to cover the main features of the line graph regarding past, current, and projected overweight rates in nine countries. However, the selection of data is somewhat haphazard and lacks a clear overview or fully developed comparisons. The student mentions extremes like the USA and Korea, and touches upon specific years such as 1990 and 2020. Yet, many figures are inaccurate or poorly contextualised against the visual data provided. For instance, the statement that France and Australia were on a similar ratio in 1990 is not properly supported by key comparative analysis. The overview sentence is overly brief and lacks detail. Therefore, the response demonstrates a partial overview and meets the criteria for Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into four paragraphs, including a brief introduction and conclusion-like body sections, but the overall progression lacks clarity. Cohesive devices are used sporadically and often inaccurately, such as 'Moreover', 'Apart from this', and 'In future'. The referencing between sentences is weak, making it difficult to follow the logical development of ideas. Paragraphing is attempted, but individual paragraphs lack internal cohesion and fail to group related information effectively. While there is a basic attempt to structure a report, the mechanical and faulty use of cohesive links places this response firmly at Band 5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple terms like 'ratio', 'proportion', 'percentage', and 'countries'. There are frequent inappropriate word choices and collocations, such as 'Usa was top on the list', 'at bottom in future', and 'the proportion was highly surged'. While the range is sufficient to convey a general topic, the lack of precision and the presence of noticeable errors in word formation ('rise up' instead of 'rose') restrict the score. The lexical control is minimally adequate for the task, corresponding to a Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that are frequently faulty. There are multiple grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('in future', 'for England'), incorrect prepositions ('on the list', 'at bottom'), and tense inconsistencies (mixing past and present references when discussing historical data). For example, 'USA was also seems to increase' contains a tense and verb agreement error. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and demonstrate a lack of control over complex structures, aligning with Band 4.5, rounded to Band 5.
