Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph compares past and projected future overweight rates in nine selected OECD contries from the 1970s to around 2020.
Overall, overwight rates increased in most contries and are expected to rise further. The USA is predicted to have the highest proportion, while Korea remains the lowest.
To begin with, The USA Started at about 45% in the early 1970s, fell slightly to 43% in 1978, and then increased steadily, reaching a projected 74% by 2019. England also showed a strorong upward trand, rising from approximately 48% in 1991 to 39% in 2019. Australia increased from around 31% in 1991 to about 36% in 2000, before being projected to rise sharply to 64% in 2019. Spain and Canada followed followed more moderate upward trends, reaching approximately 55% by the end of the period.

Austria remained relatively stable at around 38-40% until the late 2000, before rising to about 46%. Italy and France also increased gradually, Reaching approximately 45% and 46%, respectively, korea consistenly recorded the lowest fighres, although its rate climed from around 25% in 1998 to 35% in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student covers all parts of the task well by identifying past and projected future overweight rates across the selected countries. A clear overview is provided, highlighting key extremes such as the USA having the highest proportion and Korea remaining the lowest. Main features and comparisons are generally well selected and reported, such as noting the upward trends in countries like Australia, Spain, and Canada. However, there is a minor data misinterpretation or contradiction in the text when mentioning England, where the student writes "rising from approximately 48% in 1991 to 39% in 2019" (which is actually a drop). Despite this minor numerical oversight, the response effectively satisfies the requirements for an overall task response at this level, demonstrating a clear overview and appropriate selection of data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is arranged logically into four paragraphs, beginning with an introduction, followed by an overall summary, and then body paragraphs detailing specific country data. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, such as "Overall," "To begin with," and "Furthermore." However, paragraphing and logical progression face minor disruptions due to the mixing of country comparisons and some repetitive structural patterns (e.g., beginning multiple sentences with country names and rising trends). Referencing is generally clear, but the logical sequencing within the body paragraphs could be smoother to ensure a seamless progression throughout the text. Overall cohesion is functional and satisfies the criteria for a clear, coherent arrangement.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing graphical data, including terms such as "proportion," "projected," "steadily," "upward trend," and "stable." There are, however, several spelling and typographical errors throughout the text, including "contries" instead of "countries," "overwight" instead of "overweight," "strorong" instead of "strong," "trand" instead of "trend," "consistenly" instead of "consistently," and "fighres" instead of "figures." Additionally, some word choices contain minor awkwardness or capitalization errors (e.g., "mid-1990" instead of "mid-1990s"). These errors do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing past tenses for historical data and future/modal structures for projections (e.g., "is predicted to have," "before being projected to rise sharply"). There are several grammatical and punctuation errors, such as capitalization issues ("The USA Started"), double conjunctions or verb repetitions ("followed followed"), missing plural markers, and incorrect prepositions or time expressions (e.g., "in the mid-1990"). Despite these recurring errors and mechanical slips, the structures used do not severely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the intended data comparisons.
