Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main features of the line graph, providing an overview and selecting several countries to report on, such as the USA and Korea. However, there are significant inaccuracies in the data reported. For example, the student states that the USA starts at 48% (actual is around 45% in 1972) and that Korea starts in 2000 at 25% (it starts in 1998). Furthermore, the overview mentions 'nine countries with their changed overweights,' which is overly simplistic. While some key trends like the USA remaining highest and Korea being lowest are captured, the frequent data inaccuracies and under-developed comparisons prevent the response from achieving a higher band. It satisfies the basic requirements of summarising the data, earning a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response shows some organisation, grouping information about different countries into distinct paragraphs. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the transitions between sentences feel disjointed. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively, such as the frequent use of 'While,' 'Moreover,' and 'Furthermore' at the beginnings of sentences. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of countries feels somewhat random rather than logically structured (e.g., mixing Italy, France, Austria, England, Canada, and Spain together in a single paragraph). Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as 'during 2010 he gets a curve.' These issues place the response at a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on simple words like 'starts,' 'ends,' and 'going.' There are noticeable attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'project future' (intended as projected future), 'dramatically,' and 'finalize,' but these are often inaccurate in form or collocation. Word choice errors, such as 'changed overweights' instead of 'overweight rates' and 'during 2010 he gets a curve,' cause some difficulty for the reader and reveal a limited range of control. Spelling and word formation errors (e.g., 'project' for 'projected', 'drametically') further restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at more complex structures frequently result in faulty grammar, such as missing verbs, incorrect prepositions, and tense confusion (e.g., 'USA remains on the top from beginning to ending, while, Korea having the smallest starting and ending points' and 'Italy, France and Austria starting point is almost same'). Errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage are frequent throughout the text. These persistent errors often cause difficulty for the reader and mean the grammar level aligns best with Band 4.5 or 5.0. Awarding a Band 5.0.
