Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graph illustrates the historical and projected proportion of overweight individuals across nine selected OECD countries between 1970 and 2020.
Overall, all nine nations show an upward trajectory in overweight rates over the 50-year period. The USA consistently maintains the highest proportion of overweight citizens, whereas Korea displays the lowest figures throughout the timeframe.
Looking at the highest-ranking countries, the overweight population in the USA started at approximately 47% in 1970 and experienced a steady rise, projected to reach around 75% by 2020. Similarly, England and Canada followed a comparable growth pattern, beginning at around 46% and 50% in the late 1980s and rising significantly to anticipated highs of roughly 68% and 64% respectively by 2020.
Regarding the remaining nations, Spain, Austria, Australia, Italy, and France exhibited moderate increases. Austria and Spain hovered between 40% and 45% in 1990 and are forecasted to climb gradually to nearly 55% by 2020. Australia saw a sharper surge, jumping from under 30% in 1990 to over 50% in 2010 before stabilizing. Korea maintained the lowest overweight rate, starting at approximately 20% in the late 1990s and rising modestly to reach around 35% by the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response effectively covers all major parts of the task, selecting and reporting key features and making relevant comparisons across the countries. You provide a clear overview at the beginning stating the general upward trajectory and identifying the extremes (the USA and Korea). Specific data points are selected well to illustrate these trends, such as the USA starting around 47% in 1970 and reaching 75%, and Korea maintaining the lowest rates. There are a few minor approximations in data interpretation compared to the source text, but these do not detract from the overall clarity and accuracy of your summary. Your response meets all requirements for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
Your essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly, beginning with an overall summary and overview, followed by detailed paragraphs categorising the countries by their rankings and trends. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Looking at the highest-ranking countries', and 'Regarding the remaining nations' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is also well-managed, with each paragraph serving a distinct purpose in structuring your report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task, using precise phrasing such as 'upward trajectory', 'consistently maintains', and 'projected future overweight rates'. Less common lexical items are attempted with general awareness of style and collocation, such as 'anticipated highs' and 'moderate increases'. There are occasional slight inaccuracies in word choice or minor misstatements of data trends, but these do not impede communication at all and vocabulary remains adequate to convey complex ideas clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You utilise a good variety of complex sentence structures, including participial phrases and relative clauses (e.g., 'beginning at around 46% and 50% in the late 1980s and rising significantly...'). There is a high proportion of error-free sentences, showing strong control over grammar and punctuation. Minor slips do occasionally occur, but they are non-systematic and do not hinder comprehension. Control over tense usage for past data versus future projections is handled well.
