Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover the main features of the line graph, including general trends and specific country comparisons. However, there are numerous inaccuracies in the data reported. For example, the student states that the obesity rate in the USA reached around 75% in 2020 (actual is around 74%), but misreports several other figures, such as Canada's starting rate and Korea's starting rate (stating 15% around 1999, whereas the chart shows 25% in 1998). Furthermore, confusing 'obesity' and 'overweight' occurs throughout the text, as the prompt specifies overweight rates. While the overall trend is identified correctly, the inconsistent and inaccurate data reporting limits the score to a Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into three paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph containing the detailed data. While there is a basic logical progression from general trends to specifics, the lack of clear paragraphing for the detailed body content creates a massive block of text that is difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes repetitive (e.g., overuse of 'over the period'). Referencing between sentences is occasionally unclear, such as abrupt shifts between countries without adequate transitional phrases. Overall, the organizational structure is basic and warrants a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is somewhat limited and repetitive. Words like 'rate', 'overweight', and 'period' are repeated excessively. The student attempts some less common vocabulary (e.g., 'sizeabely', 'projected' - though projected was missed, 'highest'), but these attempts are frequently marred by spelling errors ('sizeabely', 'begginig', 'finihed', 'roses' instead of 'rose', 'leastes') and awkward word choices ('overweights rate', 'overweighted rates'). The vocabulary is adequate for basic communication but contains noticeable errors that occasionally impede the reader, placing it firmly at a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in verb tense and agreement (e.g., 'there was increasing trend', 'rate was at around 45% in 1970 which is increased sizeabely and reached', 'rate roses'). Punctuation and capitalization are also problematic, particularly with country names in parentheses and lowercase letters at inappropriate places. While meaning can generally be deciphered, the frequency of grammatical errors causes difficulty for the reader, resulting in a Band 5.0.
