Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 6.0)
the line graph compares the past present projected percentage of overweight individuals in nine selected OECD countries between 190 to 2020
overall overweight rates across all nine countries show an upward trajectory over the entire 50-year period. The USA consistently records the highest proportion of overweight citizens throughout the timeframe, whereas Korea consistently maintains the lowest percentage. In 1970, the USA stood out with the highest overweight rate at 47%. It rose steadily to around 61% in 2000 and is projected to reach approximately 65%–69% by 2020. England and Australia showed sharp increases over time; England's rate grew from nearly 30% in 1970 to 50% in 2000, with a forecast to reach 65% by 2020, making it second only to the USA. Canada also experienced a significant upward shift, rising from 27% in 1978 to a projected 58% in 2020.The remaining nations experienced lower overall rates and more gradual growth. Spain began at around 34% in 1987 and is expected to climb to 50% by 2020. Austria, France, and Italy hovered between 30% and 40% near the turn of the century and are projected to end the period around 38% to 46%. Korea consistently recorded the lowest figures, starting at 20% in 1990 and projected to reach only 35% by 2020

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features, selecting appropriate data points, and making relevant comparisons across the countries. An overview is successfully presented in the second paragraph, highlighting the general upward trajectory and the positions of the USA and Korea. However, there are some inaccuracies when reporting specific data points compared to the visual reference; for instance, the starting year given is 190 instead of 1970, and several figures (such as the USA in 1970 and England in 1970) do not accurately match the chart data. Despite these minor data discrepancies, the response successfully identifies the key trends and fulfills the requirements of Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized logically with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs that group countries by their trends (rapid growth versus gradual growth). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are generally used to guide the reader, such as 'overall', 'whereas', and 'the remaining nations'. However, referencing and transitions can occasionally feel a bit mechanical or lack seamless connection, and the complete absence of punctuation throughout the text negatively affects the flow and readability of the sentences.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range suitable for describing trends and data, using terms like 'upward trajectory', 'consistently maintains', 'sharp increases', and 'projected'. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'proportion', 'forecast', and 'gradual growth'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice or minor errors, but overall the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating clauses with phrases like 'is projected to reach' and 'hovered between'. However, the complete lack of capitalisation and end-of-sentence punctuation (such as periods or commas) throughout the entire response significantly impacts punctuation control. While many grammatical structures themselves are intact and understandable, the total absence of punctuation prevents the response from achieving a higher band score in accuracy and mechanics.
