Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student attempts to address the task by summarising the main features of the line graph showing overweight rates in nine countries. Key trends are mentioned, such as the USA having the highest figures throughout the period and Korea recording the lowest. However, the selection of data is somewhat disjointed and lacks precision. For example, the writer mentions that the USA was at below 50 percent after 1970 and reached over 70 percent by 2020, which is generally accurate according to the chart, but other descriptions are vague or lack accurate data references (e.g., 'the rest of the countries like Austria, France, Italy and Spain started by the year after 1980'). The overview is slightly weak, but the response does present a general picture of the data, placing it at a Band 5.5 to 6.0 level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is structured into four short paragraphs, representing a rudimentary introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion-like final sentence. However, paragraphing and logical progression are weak. Sentences often feel disjointed, and the cohesive devices used are repetitive or awkward, such as 'Meanwhile the Korea first apperance' and 'The rest of the countries like...'. Referencing and logical sequencing between ideas lack fluidity, making the overall arrangement somewhat mechanical and difficult to follow in places. This corresponds to a Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items related to data description such as 'consistently ranked', 'projected future', 'gradually increases', and 'dramatically'. However, there are several noticeable vocabulary and word-choice errors, including 'percantage' (percentage), 'apperance' (appearance), and inappropriate collocations like 'stood at last' instead of 'ranked lowest'. Spelling and word formation errors are frequent enough to cause some distraction for the reader, placing this criterion firmly at Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('This graph illustrate's', 'increases more than above'), missing articles ('the Korea'), and awkward prepositional phrases ('by the year after 1980'). Punctuation is also poorly handled, with missing spaces after commas and periods. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the score to a Band 5.0.
