Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to cover the main trends in the line graph, identifying that overweight rates generally increased from 1970 to 2020 and pointing out that the USA and Korea represent high and low extremes respectively. However, the response contains significant data inaccuracies and confusion regarding the years and percentages. For instance, the student states 'in 1990 the USA showed the porportion startin at percentae if the 45%', whereas the graph shows the USA starting in 1972 at 45%. Furthermore, the description of other countries' figures becomes confused and tangled, mixing up values for Canada, Spain, and Australia. While an overview is attempted, the lack of accurate reporting and poor selection of key comparative features prevents the response from achieving a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The text suffers from a lack of effective paragraphing, presented largely as two dense blocks of text, which hinders the overall readability and visual structure of an academic report. Cohesive devices are used, but they are frequently mechanical, repetitive ('followed by', 'that showed'), or used incorrectly to link disparate data points. The logical progression is difficult to follow because sentences string together numerous countries and statistics without clear signposting or grouping of related trends. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it hard to determine which statistic belongs to which country in the dense middle section of the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, relying heavily on words like 'proportion', 'percentage', 'overweight', and 'rate'. There are numerous spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, such as 'rom' instead of 'from', 'shoed' instead of 'showed', 'greate' instead of 'great', 'porportion' instead of 'proportion', 'plumated' instead of 'plummeted' or 'climbed', and 'sgow' instead of 'show'. While the student attempts some less common vocabulary, the high frequency of typographical and lexical errors impairs the precision of the report and causes noticeable strain for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying primarily on simple sentences or awkwardly joined coordinate clauses that result in run-on sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles, incorrect prepositions ('over the period of the time'), subject-verb agreement issues ('USA shoed'), and tense confusion. Punctuation is also weak, with run-on phrasing and missing commas separating complex lists of data. These persistent errors frequently impede communication and make it difficult to follow the intended comparisons between countries.
