The line graph below shows past and current overweight rates, as well as a projected future overweight rate in nine selected countries.

Summarise the infonnation by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given graph illustrates the Past and Projected overweight rates of the citizens residing in OECD countries from 1970 to 2020.

Overall, we can state that mostly all OECD Countries shows a projected surge in overweight people by the year 2020 however, there is significant rise in people who might be overweight in the progressive time in countries like the USA, England and Australia.

In the year 1970, we can observe that approximately 45% people were overweight but there was slight drop in the year 1980 however, it only rose up from that point and by the year 2020, the proportion surged upto 75% people who were projected overweight. Similarily, Countries like Australia and England projected similar patterns. In the year 1990 Australia was recorded around 33% which by 2020 soared upto 63% whilst, England was initially recorded at a high percentage of 45% in 1990 but rose to 70% in 2020.

Other countries also showed an inclined graph such as Korea, France, Italy, Austria, Spain and Canada but the data was not overwhelming though, it did projected a rise in people who might suffer with obesity. For instance, Korea initially only had 25% of people who were recorded overweight but the proportions increased to 35% approximately. However, France graph kept fluctuating with dips frequently in between the years from 1990 to 2010. The graphs of countries such as Italy, Austria, Spain and Canada did not posses any changes and remained under 60% compared to any other OECD countries.
