Student answer (Band 5.5)

The graph illustrates 9 specific countries below whose rates of overweight is given in percentages from 1970 to 2020.

From the graph, it has been clearly observed that United States Of America has the highest rate of obesity cases crossing 70% in 2019 from being at about 45% back in the 70s. While it is seen that the lowest value in percentage of overweight cases is about 25% which has been witnessed by Korea previously in the 90s.

Unlike the other 8 countries, the obesity rate in Korea has remained significantly low throughout the years, since its proportion shown in 2019 is only about 34%.

After the United States, England holds the second place for landing the most overweight reports in 2019 as it reaches a percentage of 69%. Countries including France, Austria, Italy, and Canada haven't shown much crucial changes in their proportions from the past to the projected future.

USA and Canada are the only countries provided in the graph that intially had a decline in their rates back in 90s for USA and early 2000s for Canada.

The overweight records shown by this graph has fluctuated for some countries while it has increased marginally for the others.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the line graph, correctly identifying extremes such as the USA having the highest overweight rates and Korea recording the lowest. An overview is present, and key comparisons are made between the selected countries, noting general trends like increases and fluctuations. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting; for instance, the student states that Korea's proportion in 2019 is about 34%, whereas the graph shows it at approximately 35%, and misinterprets the overall trend for certain countries. Despite these minor data slips, all parts of the task are addressed adequately, fulfilling the requirements for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is organized into distinct paragraphs, creating a coherent overall arrangement. Information flows reasonably well, though the progression between sentences can occasionally feel somewhat disjointed. Cohesive devices such as 'While it is seen', 'Unlike the other 8 countries', and 'After the United States' are utilized, but referencing and logical links are at times mechanical or slightly awkward. Paragraphing is present and generally appropriate, separating the introduction, body details, and concluding observations, placing this text firmly at Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'proportion', 'fluctuated', 'marginally', and 'projected future'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though some awkward phrasing and word choices occur, such as 'landing the most overweight reports' instead of 'recording the highest proportions of overweight individuals'. Spelling and word-choice errors are present ('intially'), but they do not impede overall communication, fitting the Band 6.0 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and introductory dependent clauses (e.g., 'Unlike the other 8 countries, the obesity rate in Korea has remained significantly low...'). However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'rates of overweight is given' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'countries... haven't shown much crucial changes'. Punctuation is generally functional, but the frequency of grammatical slips places this performance at a Band 5.5.
