Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task partially, attempting to present an overview and select main features from the line graph about overweight rates. However, the information is presented with limited development. While the writer tries to group countries based on their starting percentages, such as stating that the USA, England, Spain, and Canada started around 40-50 percent, the descriptions lack precision and key data comparisons. Furthermore, the overview is somewhat confused, and some of the reported figures, like claiming Canada ended at 55 percent while missing other critical endpoints, prevent the response from fully developing the key trends. To move to a higher level, the writer should ensure all main trends are clearly identified, properly supported with accurate data points, and structured into a more developed overview that captures the overall trajectory of all countries.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some basic organisation in the response, with paragraphs attempting to separate the overview from body details. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow is disrupted by repetitive phrasing and weak structural links. Cohesive devices are used very mechanically, relying heavily on simple connectors like 'and' or repetitive phrases like 'start from' and 'end with'. Paragraphing is also erratic, as the introductory sentence and the initial overview are blended awkwardly. To improve coherence and achieve a higher band, the writer needs to use a wider variety of cohesive devices more accurately and ensure that each paragraph builds logically on the previous one to guide the reader smoothly through the data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, which is adequate for a minimal description but restricts precision. The writer frequently repeats basic verbs and nouns, such as 'percentage', 'population', 'start', and 'end'. There are also noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'comining' instead of 'coming' or 'falling', 'over waight' instead of 'overweight', and 'line of approch' or 'lining'. These errors and the restricted range sometimes cause minor difficulty or strain for the reader. To reach the next level, the writer should incorporate a broader range of vocabulary specific to data trends, such as verbs of change and accurate descriptive adjectives, while improving spelling and word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences joined by coordinating conjunctions. Attempts at more complex structures are frequently faulty, leading to numerous grammatical errors. There are frequent issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'the countries was selected', missing articles like 'the USA', incorrect tense usage such as 'population going to the peak', and faulty prepositions within grammatical patterns. Punctuation is also weak, with a lack of capitalisation at the beginning of sentences. These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty and distraction for the reader. To progress, the writer must practice forming complex sentences accurately, paying careful attention to verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and basic sentence mechanics.
