Summarise the infonnation by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graph illustrates the proportion of overweight people in nine selected OECD countries, showing past figures as well as projections up to 2020.
Overall, the proportion of overweight people increased in all nine countries, although the extent of the rise varied considerably. The USA is projected to have the highest rate by 2020, while Korea is expected to remain the country with the lowest proportion. Australia is also predicted to experience a particularly significant increase.
The USA had an overweight rate of approximately 45% in the 1970s. After falling slightly in the late 1970s, the figure rose steadily and is projected to reach about 74% by 2020. England also shows a substantial increase, rising from around 48% in the early 1990s to almost 70% in 2020. Canada follows a similar pattern, with its rate increasing from about 49% to approximately 65%. Spain is expected to rise more gradually, reaching around 55% by 2020.
The remaining countries generally had lower rates. Australia is projected to increase considerably, from around 32% in the early 1990s to about 64% in 2020. Italy, France and Austria are expected to reach approximately 45–46%. Meanwhile, Korea has the lowest figures throughout the period, although its rate is predicted to rise from about 25% to 35% by 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear overview of the line graph and accurately reporting the main features and trends across the nine OECD countries. Key data points, such as the USA reaching about 74% and Korea remaining the lowest at 35%, are correctly cited and supported. To move closer to a higher band, the response could benefit from a more rigorous and comprehensive selection of figures when discussing the intermediate countries, as some data points are grouped broadly rather than fully detailed. However, the core requirements are solidly met, presenting a clear summary that reflects the main trends without drifting off topic.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The report demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly, with an introductory paragraph, a well-defined overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to contrasting the highest-performing countries with those showing more moderate or lower rates. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Meanwhile', and 'After falling slightly' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is managed appropriately, and referencing throughout the text is clear, ensuring that the progression of ideas remains smooth and easy to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The vocabulary used is generally sufficient and demonstrates a good level of flexibility and precision suitable for an academic task. Less common lexical items and phrasing, such as 'proportion of overweight people', 'projected future overweight rates', and 'rise more gradually', show an awareness of style and collocation. Word choices are precise, and spelling is accurate throughout. To achieve an even higher band, the student could incorporate a wider variety of sophisticated synonyms and less common academic collocations to describe trends, avoiding occasional repetitive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The writing exhibits a good variety of complex structures, including subordinate clauses and participial phrases, alongside simple forms. There is a high proportion of error-free sentences, demonstrating strong control over grammar and punctuation. Verb tenses and time markers, such as past figures versus future projections ('is projected to reach', 'had an overweight rate'), are handled accurately. While occasional minor slips may occur, grammar and punctuation errors do not impede communication at all, showing consistent control across the entire response.
