Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response responds to the task only minimally and fails to meet the required word count minimum of 150 words, standing at 135 words. While the student attempts to summarise the line graph by mentioning some figures and countries like the USA and England, the selection of data is erratic and lacks a clear overall picture. Key features and comparisons between countries are underdeveloped, and the overview statement is overly simplistic. To reach a higher level, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is satisfied, present a well-developed overview of main trends, and select and report data more accurately without significant omissions or confusing data points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The text shows some basic organisation with an attempt at an introduction and body paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression or logical flow between sentences. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, or inaccurate, with awkward transitions like 'Meanwhile', 'Canada, In Contrast,', and 'Spain, take start'. Paragraphing is also somewhat disjointed and abrupt, ending abruptly without a concluding summary. To improve, the student needs to use a wider range of cohesive devices more naturally, ensure logical sequencing of data points, and structure the response into clear, distinct paragraphs that guide the reader smoothly through the comparative analysis.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, struggling with accurate collocations and word forms. There are numerous lexical errors and unnatural expressions throughout the text, such as 'overwieght rose at', 'various figure', 'take start from', and 'touch 45%'. Spelling and word-choice errors, including 'OCED' instead of 'OECD', are noticeable and occasionally cause confusion. For a higher score, the student should employ a more varied and precise range of vocabulary related to data trends, such as verbs and nouns denoting change (e.g., 'fluuctuate', 'decline', 'growth'), and pay closer attention to standard collocational patterns and correct spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple or awkwardly attempted complex sentences that frequently contain errors. There are frequent mistakes in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'The line graph illustrate', 'rose at 74%', 'began at 1990', and 'reaches to 55%'. Punctuation is also poorly handled, with irregular comma splices and spaces before punctuation marks. To achieve higher bands, the writer must exercise better control over grammatical forms, use accurate prepositions with statistical data, and incorporate a wider mix of error-free complex sentences.
