Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing past and projected future overweight rates in OECD countries, but it only partially covers the task. The overview provided in the second paragraph is very vague and contains inaccurate summaries, such as claiming that countries like Austria, Italy, and France remained 'gradually constant' or that Spain and Canada had a 'slump decrease in past' when the data shows general upward trends. Furthermore, specific data points from the chart are largely missing, and the information is presented in a generalised and repetitive manner rather than selecting and reporting the main features with precise comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response exhibits some organisation with an introduction, a body paragraph, and a conclusion, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. The grouping of countries feels somewhat random, and cohesive devices are inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive, such as the frequent misuse of words like 'slump' and 'future' to link sentences. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks logical sequencing, making it difficult for the reader to follow a clear line of argument or data comparison throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and restricted, featuring frequent word choice errors and awkward collocations. For instance, terms like 'dsicuss' (spelling error), 'rapidly increase' (incorrect word form), 'gradually constant' (oxymoronic collocation), and 'slump decrease' demonstrate limited control over lexical items. Less common vocabulary is attempted with noticeable inaccuracy, which occasionally causes strain for the reader when attempting to comprehend the intended meaning of the statistical trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The text relies heavily on a limited range of sentence structures, and attempts at complex or comparative structures are often faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('USA, ENGLAND, AUSTRALIA these countries have seen'), missing prepositions, and awkward phrasing in relative clauses ('make a comparison how...'). Punctuation and article usage are also inconsistent throughout the response, resulting in frequent errors that can cause difficulty and require the reader to re-read sentences to grasp the meaning.
