Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response makes an attempt to summarise the data from the line graph, but it only partially addresses the task. While some main features and countries are mentioned—such as the USA and England—the overview is very weak, merely stating that rates rose or fluctuated without capturing the broader trends. Furthermore, several data points reported in the text contain noticeable inaccuracies when compared to the visual data, such as Korea rising to 46% in 2019 when the chart shows it at 35%. The selection of data lacks a clear strategy, leading to a response that covers some parts of the task minimally and relies on generalised or misread figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation in the response, grouping countries into those that generally increased and those that fluctuated, but there is no clear overall progression. Paragraphing is fragmented, with many very short, single-sentence paragraphs that disrupt the flow of information. Cohesive devices are either missing, inadequate, or repetitive, making the text feel disjointed. For instance, transitional phrases like 'Meanwhile', 'On the other hand', and 'Comparetively' are used mechanically rather than to create a smooth, logical progression between ideas. Referencing and links between sentences often feel abrupt, requiring the reader to work harder to follow the intended comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that cause some difficulty for the reader. There are frequent lexical and word-form errors, such as 'overweighted' instead of 'overweight', 'weight rate' instead of 'overweight rates', and awkward phrasing like 'take start' and 'fluctuate between... throughtoy form'. Spelling errors also occur, such as 'Wherease' and 'Comparetively', alongside incomplete sentences at the end of the text. While the student attempts to use some vocabulary related to data trends ('peaked', 'fluctuate'), the high frequency of inaccurate word choices and non-standard collocations restricts the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response features a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and basic subject-verb-object patterns. Attempts at more complex structures or descriptive clauses are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors in grammar, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions. Examples include 'The line graph illustrate' (agreement error), 'rise at USA' (preposition error), and missing articles or incorrect tense usage throughout. Punctuation is also problematic, with erratic comma splices and an incomplete final sentence ('thri'). These persistent errors can cause strain and confusion for the reader, keeping the grammatical score at this level.
