Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task partially by outlining some main features and making basic comparisons, such as noting that the USA, England, and Australia recorded the highest figures while Korea registered the lowest. However, the selection of data is limited, and key details or specific intermediate trends across all nine countries are glossed over rather than fully reported. Furthermore, there are inaccuracies in the data points reported, such as the statement about the USA going down to approximately 42% between 1970 and 1980 (the chart shows a slight decrease from 45% to 43%). To reach a higher band, the response needs to provide a more thorough and accurate overview of the data, selecting more representative comparisons without relying on generalizations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response shows some organization with a discernible introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding overview of sorts, but there is no clear overall progression of information. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of data feels disjointed, with body paragraphs lacking logical sequencing and smooth transitions between countries. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes inaccurate, leading to a mechanical feel. For instance, sentences are often strung together loosely with basic connectors like 'while' or 'and then'. To improve cohesion, the writer should ensure that each paragraph focuses on a clear thematic grouping of countries or time periods, employing a wider variety of accurate cohesive devices to guide the reader seamlessly through the data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey the general topic of overweight rates. There are noticeable lexical errors, such as spelling mistakes ('persentage', 'countires', 'consistantly', 'alonside') and awkward word choices ('the korea', 'record its historical rate'), which occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The range of vocabulary lacks flexibility and precision, relying heavily on repetitive terms like 'rate', 'percentage', and 'highest'. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire to include more precise descriptive vocabulary for trends, such as 'proportion', 'prevailing figures', or 'upward trajectory', while also paying closer attention to standard spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response employs a limited range of sentence structures, primarily relying on simple sentences with occasional, mostly faulty, attempts at complex forms. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('the USA', 'the Korea'), incorrect prepositions ('at almost 45%', 'went down at'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('the persentage... rise'). Punctuation is also problematic, notably the lack of capitalization at the beginning of sentences and for proper nouns like 'Usa', 'England', and 'Korea'. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty and strain for the reader. To improve, the writer should practice forming complex sentences accurately, ensure correct tense usage for historical data, and pay rigorous attention to basic punctuation and articles.
