Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response attempts to address the task by reporting information from the line chart on overweight rates, providing an overview and mentioning several key countries like the USA, England, and Korea. However, the information presented contains several inaccuracies and is only partially developed. For instance, the student states that the USA covered around 45% in the former year 'which hit down in 1980 and gradually increased from 43% to 75% in 2020', which misinterprets parts of the trend. Additionally, data points for other nations are sometimes misquoted or generalized, and some key comparisons are missing. While the response does touch upon the main features of the chart, the lack of precision and under-development of certain data trends mean the task is addressed only partially, placing this criterion at the current level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used to separate different groups of countries logically. However, cohesion at the sentence level is sometimes mechanical or faulty. Phrases like 'To commence with' and 'Probimg ahead to further details' are somewhat awkward, and referencing is not always clear, which disrupts the natural flow of ideas. While there is a progression of information from the overview to specific details, the cohesive devices are at times inadequate or awkwardly applied, fitting a standard of logical organisation where connection between sentences can occasionally feel forced.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'fluctuations', 'proportion', and 'projected'. However, there are numerous noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation throughout the text. Examples include 'outweight' instead of overweight, 'chossing' instead of choosing, 'mesured' instead of measured, 'ration' instead of ratio, 'prjected' instead of projection, and 'begainned' instead of began. These lexical inaccuracies and misspellings cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect limited control over less common vocabulary items, keeping the vocabulary score constrained.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of grammatical and structural issues include 'The units are mesured in percentages' (passive voice phrasing), 'USA had depicted' (incorrect tense usage), 'as compared to others nations' (plural agreement error), and missing prepositions or incorrect articles, such as 'hit down' or 'in few years'. Because these errors occur with high frequency and occasionally obscure the intended meaning, the grammatical control sits within the lower range of accuracy.
