Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, as the writing is incomplete and stops abruptly in the middle of a sentence. While the student attempts to provide an overview and select some main features, the information presented contains noticeable inaccuracies and confusion regarding the data. For instance, the starting rate for England is stated as 58% when the chart shows it beginning much lower around 1990, and several of the starting values and dates are misattributed or mechanically listed with inaccuracies, such as 'rates of about 39%, 42%, 33%, 30.5%, 58% respectively'. Furthermore, the overview is overly simplistic, describing the USA as 'the most popular of having the highest rate' rather than formulating a clear, objective summary of the overall trends. The development of ideas is limited and under-developed, and the failure to complete the task significantly impacts the overall communication of the main features and comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation, but the overall progression lacks clarity and logical flow. The text is divided into paragraphs, but the internal structure of these paragraphs is weak. Cohesive devices are either inadequate, inaccurate, or used repetitively. For example, expressions like 'meanwhile it fluctutaed in the present years' and 'In contrast the percent of overweight start appearing' are clumsy and fail to create clear semantic relationships between ideas. Referencing is occasionally confusing, and the abrupt ending of the response means there is no logical conclusion or final synthesis of information. Paragraphing is attempted, but because the writing trails off unfinished, the structural progression of the response remains incomplete and disjointed.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for conveying basic ideas about the data, though it suffers from noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form that cause difficulty for the reader. Phrases such as 'overweights rates', 'the most popular of having the highest rate', and 'the least amount of proportion' demonstrate awkward phrasing and lexical inaccuracy. Additionally, there are spelling errors like 'iwhile' and 'fluctutaed', and inappropriate word choices such as using 'popular' to describe a country with a high disease or condition rate. The range of vocabulary is restricted mostly to basic terms related to increase and decrease, preventing the student from achieving a more precise or sophisticated discussion of the statistical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple patterns with frequent errors when attempting more complex constructions. There are numerous grammatical inaccuracies throughout the text, including tense errors, missing articles, awkward prepositional usage, and punctuation mistakes. Examples include 'percentage is of overweight is growing over the time period', missing capitalization and punctuation such as '. it went through', and subject-verb agreement issues. These frequent errors occur across basic and complex sentences alike, and although the general meaning can sometimes be guessed, the density of grammatical faults causes considerable difficulty and strain for the reader.
