Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given graph compares the past, present and future overweight rates in selected countries (USA, England, Spain, Austria, Australia, Italy, Canada, France and Korea).

Overall, it is clear that USA markedly climbed through out the whole period, whereas Australia significantly surged. Conversely, Korea and France remained at lower values over the period.

To begin with USA rates were less than 50% in 1970, if fluctuated in 1980 but a substantial increase is recorded from 1980 to 2020. Subsequently, England's journey started from 1990 and accounted for more than 40% and gradually jumped at almost 70% in 2020. Additionally, Australia soared from more than 30% in 1990 to 64% in 2020.

Furthermore, Spain and Canada faced minor fluctuation in 2000 from starting to end period and made up 55%. Moreover, Austria's rate began in 1980 from almost 40% and recorded about 40% in 2020 as well as Italy's rate began between 1990 and 2000 contributed almost 48% and ended up at same as Italy. Eventually, Korea and France remaind at lower level over the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response covers all parts of the task by mentioning the overall trends and incorporating data from multiple countries, which is sufficient for this level. However, the development is uneven. While countries like the USA, England, and Australia receive adequate attention with specific starting and ending points, others like Spain and Canada are grouped together somewhat vaguely, stating they 'faced minor fluctuation' and 'made up 55%'. Additionally, some of the data points reported contain inaccuracies when checked against the chart, such as Austria's starting point or Italy's final figure. To reach a higher standard, every selected country's main features should be reported with greater precision, and the comparisons between nations should be more clearly articulated throughout the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear opening statement, an overview paragraph, and distinct body paragraphs grouping the countries logically. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the data, such as 'To begin with', 'Additionally', and 'Furthermore'. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty, and referencing is not always clear, as seen in the sentence concluding the discussion on Italy and the abrupt transition to Korea and France. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the information, but smoother transitions and clearer pronoun referencing between sentences would improve the overall flow and logical progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items and trend-related verbs such as 'climbed', 'surged', 'fluctuated', and 'soared'. However, there are notable word choice and word form errors that occasionally distract the reader, such as writing 'if fluctuated' instead of 'it fluctuated' and 'remaind' instead of 'remained'. There is also some awkward phrasing, such as 'contributed almost 48% and ended up at same as Italy'. The vocabulary is minimally sufficient to convey the main features, but more precise lexical control and accurate word forms are needed to attain a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like subordinate clauses introduced by 'whereas' and 'if'. However, there are noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation that recur throughout the text. These include missing prepositions, prepositional errors ('through out' instead of 'throughout'), and issues with subject-verb agreement or tense consistency, such as 'To begin with USA rates were...'. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, the presence of frequent grammatical slips prevents the writing from achieving a higher level of accuracy and control over complex structures.
