Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student has fundamentally misunderstood the chart's topic, repeatedly referring to overweight rates as 'economic growth' (e.g., 'In 1972 USA had 45% of economic growth'). This represents a significant misinterpretation of the visual data. However, the student does attempt to report trends and figures for several countries, such as noting the USA rising to 74% (though written as 75%) and referencing England, Spain, and other nations. Despite these attempts to cover the main features, the misidentification of the core topic severely undermines task fulfilment. Based on the descriptors, this performance aligns with a Band 4.5 to 5.0, where the task is addressed only partially and key concepts are misunderstood.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, starting with an introduction and followed by body paragraphs grouping different countries. However, the progression of ideas is often disjointed, and cohesive devices are used clumsily or repetitively (e.g., 'after that they had showed', 'on the other hand', 'although'). Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow which data points are being compared. Paragraphing is present, but the internal logical flow requires better transitional phrases and clearer connections between sentences. This corresponds to Band 5.0, where some organisation is evident, but overall progression lacks clarity and cohesion is frequently faulty.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The most prominent lexical issue is the persistent confusion of medical/health statistics (overweight rates) with economic data ('economic growth', 'least contributing country in terms of economic growth'). Beyond this severe semantic error, the student uses basic vocabulary with occasional attempts at less common items ('fluctuations', 'significant growth'). There are noticeable spelling and word-form errors (e.g., 'hitted', 'Furthurmore'). These errors and inappropriate word choices cause significant strain for the reader and prevent the score from reaching Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions (e.g., 'Rate are measured', 'USA remained the highest economically strong country with a continuous growth', 'started started growing', 'ended with 45% by 2020'). Punctuation is also erratic, with run-on sentences lacking appropriate conjunctions or full stops. While some simple structures are accurate, the frequency of grammatical errors causes difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptor profile.
