Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task partially, as it attempts to report main features and comparisons from the line graph, but it contains several inaccuracies in reading the data and under-develops certain areas. For example, stating that Austria remained stable until 2000 misinterprets the data, and referring to countries as 'cities' ('Looking at remaining cities') shows confusion about the data categories. While an overview is attempted ('all countires had experienced an upward trend'), it is limited and mechanically expressed. To reach a higher level, the response would need to select key features more accurately, avoid factual errors in data interpretation, and present a fully developed overview without categorisation mistakes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates some organisation with an introduction, body paragraphs, and an overall statement, but lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but transitions between ideas can be abrupt, such as the sudden shift to individual country details in the third paragraph. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or inaccurately, seen in phrases like 'Another noticable thing is that' and 'Looking at remaining cities'. Reference pronouns are occasionally unclear. To improve coherence, the logical flow between sentences and paragraphs must be strengthened, and cohesive devices should connect ideas more naturally and accurately without relying on repetitive formulas.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive verbs such as 'soared', 'surged', and 'fluctuations'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'countires', 'noticable', and referring to countries as 'cities'. Collocations are occasionally awkward, such as 'stood at from 1970 with approximately 45%'. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to expand the range of vocabulary, eliminate spelling mistakes, and ensure that word choices and collocations are precise and natural throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('which declined slightly and reached') and time clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly with prepositions and verb tense management, such as 'stood at from 1970 with approximately 45%', 'reached to around', and 'increased gradually at around'. Punctuation is also faulty in places, such as excessive spacing and missing commas. To progress to a higher band, the writer must demonstrate better control over complex grammatical structures and prepositional use, ensuring that errors are less frequent and do not disrupt the clarity of the sentences.
