Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task only partially by providing an overview and selecting some main features, such as mentioning that the USA has the highest rate and Korea the lowest. However, the data presented contains several inaccuracies when compared to the visual source, such as stating the US rate in 1980 was 42% or misrepresenting data points for Canada and Spain. Some countries listed in the prompt are omitted, and the information is sometimes too general or inadequately supported with precise figures, which prevents a fully developed account of the graph.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation evident with the use of paragraphs, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are minimal, mechanical, or used inaccurately, such as abrupt transitions between sentences and paragraphs like 'ADDITION IN CANADA ARE ALSO QUITE HIGH' and repetitive sentence openings. Pronoun referencing and linking between ideas are faulty, meaning the information does not flow smoothly from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally impede understanding. There are frequent word choice and word form errors, such as 'RATE WAS OVERWEIGHT PEOPLE' instead of 'rate of overweight people', and 'RICE' instead of 'rise'. Attempts at less common vocabulary are unsuccessful due to poor collocation and inaccuracies, though simple vocabulary like 'increase' and 'highest' is generally understood.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
There is a very limited range of sentence structures, with frequent basic errors throughout the text. The student attempts simple and some complex sentences, but these are often faulty, featuring frequent agreement and tense errors, such as 'THE LINE GRAPH ARE ILLUSTRATES', 'THE RATES IN ENGLAND WAS', and 'IT FELL DECREASE'. Punctuation is also problematic, and these frequent errors cause difficulty and strain for the reader.
