Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph tracks the changes in the past and present overweight rates in addition to an estimated future overweight rate in nine chosen countries.

Overall, fluctuations are widely evident in the overweight rates of each country. The highest obesity rate can be observed in the USA, whereas the lowest obesity rate can be seen in Korea over the years.

USA became the first country to be obese with over 45% population overweight in the 70s soaring to around 75% in 2020. Then joined Austria, Spain and Australia in the 80s. Initially the overweight population was around 40% in both Austria and Spain and 35% in Australia. The figures rose to over 45%, 55% and 65% in 2020 in the three countries respectively.

Furthermore, in the 90s, joining the list were France and England together, beginning from around 30% and 45% obese population to finally over 45% and 70% in 2020. They were followed by Italy and Canada with initial overweight rate over 35% and 50% respectively, increasing to around 45% and 55% in 2020. The last country to join was Korea, rising from 25% to 35% in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the broad pattern that the USA has the highest rate and Korea the lowest, and you include figures for all nine countries. However, the overview is weakened by saying rates fluctuate widely: most series rise overall, with only modest dips or plateaus. Some details are inaccurate or unclear. Austria did not join in the 1980s at around 40%; its series begins in 1983, while Spain begins in 1987, and Australia starts in 1990. The claim that the three countries reached 45%, 55% and 65% respectively also misstates Australia, which is about 64%, and does not clearly match the other figures. A stronger response would compare the main trajectories and identify the USA’s lead and Korea’s low position without implying all countries began at the same time.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs grouping countries by when their data begin. This makes the information reasonably easy to follow, and transitions such as “Furthermore” and “They were followed by” help signal progression. However, the grouping by countries “joining” a list is not a particularly effective way to compare the trends, and the sequence of dates is sometimes confusing—for example, Austria, Spain and Australia are grouped as beginning in the 1980s despite Australia’s data starting in 1990. The overview also does not prepare the reader for the country-by-country detail. Organise the body around comparable rate levels or overall rises, and use clearer references to the relevant years and series.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “overweight rates,” “estimated,” “soaring,” “initially” and “increasing.” These choices generally communicate the trends, and the meaning remains clear. However, some wording is imprecise or unnatural for describing this graph. “The first country to be obese” incorrectly describes a country rather than its population, while “joined the list” is vague and does not explain what the countries have in common. “Fluctuations are widely evident” overstates the small variations in mostly rising trends, and “obese population” is not equivalent to the graph’s measure of people who are overweight. Use precise terms such as “the proportion of people who were overweight” and reserve “fluctuated” for genuine rises and falls.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of sentence forms, including complex clauses such as “whereas the lowest obesity rate can be seen in Korea” and the sentence beginning “Furthermore, in the 90s.” Most sentences are understandable, and errors do not generally prevent the reader from following the comparisons. Some constructions are incomplete or awkward, however. “Then joined Austria, Spain and Australia in the 80s” lacks a clear subject, and “beginning from around 30% and 45% obese population to finally over 45% and 70%” does not form a complete, well-controlled comparison. The phrase “in the three countries respectively” also makes the intended mapping difficult to follow. Build complete sentences with explicit subjects and parallel structures, for example, “Their rates rose from X and Y to … respectively.”
