Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line graph provides an information about overweight rates in nine different countries for past 5 decades.

Overall, We can observe that since 1970 to 2020 USA had the maximum overweight rates compared to other countries. Only from 1970 to 1980 a slight decline in rates was observed from approximately 45 percent to 42 percent then after 1980 rates kept increasing in USA. Korea had lowest percentage rates than other countries, over weight rates were considered from late 19 century. No decline in percentage is predicted.

Englang a fluctuation in rates is seen. A decline was seen for Canada in the during the year 2002 then increases. France, from the year 1990 to 2000 fluctuation is seen then it increases steadily. The rates in Austria is stable from 1982 to 2000 then increase is predicted. For italy, from 1995 to 2000 much change in pattern in not seen then subsequent increase is seen. Australia, overweight rates increases.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the broad pattern that the USA had the highest rates and that most countries rose, and you include some relevant country-specific observations. However, the overview is incomplete and contains an important overstatement: Korea is the lowest only among the countries shown in the later years, not throughout the whole period, and the graph does not establish that no decline is predicted for every country. Several descriptions are too vague or inaccurate to give a clear summary: Canada’s small dip occurs around 2001, while England’s fluctuations are not explained, and the response omits Spain despite its steady overall rise. Select the main comparisons, describe the overall upward trend with appropriate qualifications, and support these points with accurate figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic structure, with an opening, an overview paragraph and a final paragraph of country details. Some sequencing is understandable, and words such as “Overall,” “then” and “For” help signal relationships. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the final paragraph moves abruptly between countries and gives little comparison or grouping. The sentence “Englang a fluctuation in rates is seen” is incomplete, and several statements are compressed or unclear, such as “A decline was seen for Canada in the during the year 2002 then increases.” Use a clearer order—for example, highest-rate countries followed by lower-rate countries—and connect each comparison explicitly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “overweight rates,” “decline,” “fluctuation,” “stable” and “increases,” so the reader can generally identify the subject of each point. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive. “Provides an information” is not a natural phrase; “overweight rates were considered” does not express the intended idea; and “much change in pattern in not seen” is difficult to interpret. There are also spelling errors in “Englang” and “italy,” and “past 5 decades” is imprecise for the dates shown. Build a more precise range for describing trends and comparisons, and check spelling and natural combinations of words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and some basic clauses communicate a trend, such as “Australia, overweight rates increases.” However, grammatical errors are frequent and sometimes make relationships unclear. Examples include the missing verb in “Englang a fluctuation in rates is seen,” the faulty construction “from the year 1990 to 2000 fluctuation is seen,” and the agreement error “rates increases.” Tense and preposition patterns also need attention: “since 1970 to 2020” should use a consistent time construction, while “in the during the year 2002” contains an unnecessary preposition. Practise complete subject–verb–object sentences and check articles, agreement and tense before adding more complex clauses.
