Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The line graph shows proportion of over weight from 20% to 80% in nine selected OECD countries namely USA, Austria, Australia, France, Italy, Korea, Spain, England and Canada over the years from 1970 till 2020. These countries have different start years. The USA overweight rate remained steadily increased starting from 45% in 1970s to more than 75% in 2020. The other countries also showed the same trend but less than USA with Korea having the lowest proportion of overweight starting from about 25% in late 1990s to more than 30% in 2020.

The line graph shows that there is fluctuation in data at first there is decrease but then a steadily increase in its percentage of overweight. Overall, The line graph depicts what percentage of overweight is present in Selected Nine countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the graph’s subject, the nine countries and the broad period, and you correctly note that Korea starts at the lowest level. However, the response reports very few of the main features and does not provide a clear, accurate overview of the comparisons. For example, the USA rises to about 74%, not “more than 75%,” and the other countries do not all simply follow the same pattern: several show fluctuations, while their final rates vary considerably. The statement that rates start with a decrease is not a useful summary of the overall trends. The response is also 19 words below the required minimum. To improve, select key highs and lows, describe the general upward trend with relevant exceptions, and support these points with accurate figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic sequence from introducing the graph to describing the USA and Korea, followed by a concluding statement. However, the information is not arranged into a clear overview and supporting details, and the final paragraph repeats the graph’s purpose rather than adding a meaningful summary. Connections between ideas are also unclear: “The other countries also showed the same trend” is too broad, and “at first there is decrease” does not specify which countries or period it refers to. The response would be easier to follow if divided into an introduction, an overview of the main patterns, and a paragraph comparing selected countries. Use linking expressions to show contrasts and changes, rather than relying on repeated references to “the line graph.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses enough basic vocabulary to communicate the topic, including “proportion,” “rate,” “fluctuation,” and “percentage.” However, the range is limited, and some word choices or forms are inaccurate or awkward, such as “over weight” and “remained steadily increased.” Repetition of “line graph,” “overweight,” and “percentage” also makes the description less precise. More specific trend language would help you compare the data without repeating the same terms—for example, describing rates as rising, levelling off, or fluctuating, and identifying the highest and lowest figures. Aim to use these alternatives accurately and naturally; a wider, more controlled range would make the report clearer and more suitable for an academic summary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, and the main topic is generally understandable. However, errors are frequent, and the range of sentence structures is limited. In “The USA overweight rate remained steadily increased,” the verb construction is faulty; use “the USA’s overweight rate increased steadily.” The sentence beginning “The line graph shows that there is fluctuation” shifts awkwardly between present and past, while “there is decrease” is missing an article. Capitalisation is inconsistent in “Overall, The line graph” and “Selected Nine countries.” Work on accurate verb forms, articles, possessives and consistent tense. Short, controlled comparisons can help you build accuracy before attempting longer sentences.
