Summarise the infonnation by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line chart illustrates the past and what is the present overweight rates with projected future overweight rate between nine different OECD countries.

Overall, there is an increase in percentage of overweight rate in all of the nine countries, some countries did decrease rate inbetween the years but the percentage kept increasing over the years.

USA first decreased the rate from 1970 to 1978-79 and then just increased the overweight rate from there till 2020, Canada also first decreased the rate from 1993 to 2000 and then increased rate from there just like USA

All the other countries England, Sapin, Austria, Italy, Austalia, France and Korea also increased rates overtime with USA taking the lead in highest rate from less than 50% to more than 70% and Korea with the lowest percentage from 25% to 35%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the broad pattern of rising overweight rates and correctly note that the USA finishes highest while Korea remains lowest. However, the response only partially reports the graph’s main features: it gives little detail about the other countries and does not compare their levels or rates of change. The claim that Canada declined from 1993 to 2000 is not supported by the chart, which shows a slight fall from about 50% in 1994 to 48% in 2001, so the dates are inaccurate. The USA’s initial decline is also placed too late: the graph begins around 1972 and falls to 1980. The response is 14 words below the required minimum, limiting the detail available. Add accurate comparisons and key figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic, useful structure: an introduction, an overall statement, and two paragraphs of details. The overview also gives the reader a general direction for the data. However, progression is limited because the final paragraph lists seven countries together without distinguishing their trends or levels, and the Canada comparison is attached to the USA sentence in a long, loosely connected construction. Linking phrases such as “also” and “just like USA” are repetitive and do not clarify the relationships between the data. Grouping countries by high, middle, and low rates, then using clear comparisons between groups, would create a more logical progression. More precise referencing would also help readers follow which country and period each statement describes.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “line chart,” “percentage,” “rate,” “increased,” and “decreased,” and the main subject remains understandable. However, the range is limited and several expressions are imprecise or repetitive, particularly repeated uses of “rate” and “increased.” Some word choices and spellings also reduce accuracy, such as “Sapin” and “Austalia,” while “taking the lead” is not the clearest way to describe the USA’s highest proportion. Use more precise language for trends and comparisons, such as “rose steadily,” “remained the lowest,” or “recorded the highest proportion.” Check country names carefully and avoid using “rate” where “proportion” or “figure” would be more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts a few longer sentence forms, including the overview’s contrast between countries that decreased and the general upward trend. However, sentence structures are limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some statements awkward or unclear. For example, “there is an increase in percentage of overweight rate” lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “some countries did decrease rate” is missing necessary words. The sentence beginning “USA first decreased” also combines two country trends with a comma rather than a clear sentence boundary. Articles and sentence construction need attention, as in “from there till 2020.” Practise writing shorter, complete comparisons first, then combine them using accurate clauses and punctuation.
