Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph gives us information about the overweight rates of 9 selected OECD countries. These countries include Korea, Italy, France, Austria, Australia, Canada, Spain, England and USA. The graph not only provides us information about past and current overweight rates, but it also provides us with their future projection.
The overweight percentage varies by country. Korea has maintainted its place as the country with the lowest rates of obesity(below 40% in 2015), while on the contrary, USA has the highest overweight percentage(More than 70% in 2015)
The data given in the graph is from the year 1970 to 2020. One common thing you can notice is that every selected country has maintained more than 20% overweight population, no matter the year. Moreover, In the graph we see a common trend. The overweight proportion always increases with passing years no matter the country. Although some counties like Austria and Australia are able lower the rate at which obesity is increasing, we can see that generally every country is heading towards a future where the overweight population will continue to increase.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the chart’s subject and give a broad overview: Korea is lowest and the USA highest, while rates generally rise. However, the overview is not consistently accurate in its timing: the USA is already around 74% by 2020, but the comparison says it is above 70% in 2015; Korea is about 35% in 2019, rather than below 40% specifically in 2015. The claim that every country’s rate “always increases” also overlooks fluctuations, such as Austria’s fall after 2004 and the small dips in England and Spain. To develop the response more fully, select and compare key figures across countries and years, and distinguish the historical data from the projections rather than relying mainly on general statements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall sequence: an introduction, a broad comparison, and a paragraph describing shared trends. Linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Although” help connect points, and the reader can follow the main message. However, the final paragraph combines several claims without supporting them with specific comparisons, and “One common thing” followed by “a common trend” is repetitive. Some references are also broad: “the rate” in the sentence about Austria and Australia does not clearly identify which country’s trend is being discussed. Organise the body around a few selected comparisons—for example, the highest and lowest rates, then countries in the middle—and use precise references to make progression more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “overweight rates,” “percentage,” “projection,” and “proportion,” so the subject is clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “heading towards a future.” Some choices are inaccurate or repetitive: “maintainted its place” is not a natural way to describe a ranking, and “the rate at which obesity is increasing” shifts from the chart’s measure of overweight to obesity. “Provides us information” is also an awkward collocation, while “common thing” is vague. Aim for precise, consistent terms such as “overweight prevalence” and “rose,” and use comparison language like “remained the lowest” or “recorded the highest proportion.” Check spelling carefully, including “maintained.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “Although” and a relative clause in “where the overweight population will continue to increase.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, but some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. For example, “These countries include … and USA” needs the article “the,” and “some counties … are able lower” needs “are able to lower.” The sentence “The overweight proportion always increases with passing years” has an awkward time expression and overstates the trend. Capitalisation after full stops is inconsistent (“In the graph”), and spaces are needed before the parenthetical examples. More accurate verb patterns and careful punctuation would improve control while preserving your sentence variety.
