Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line graph illustrates past, current and future overweight rates across nine countries.

Overall, all selected OECD countries increased considerably throught the give time despite marginal fluctuations. USA remained high over the peroid of time, while korea was the lowest.

In 1970, USA accounted for around 45%, the far high overweight rate as compared to all other coutries, figure slightly decreased to just above 40% in 1980. This figure steadily rose to 50% in 1990 and above 70% by 2010, it is estimated to peak at 75% in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response identifies the broad upward pattern and notes that the USA is high while Korea is lowest, and its USA figures are generally close to the chart. However, it reports only the USA in detail and gives no meaningful comparisons or account of the other eight countries, so the task is addressed only minimally. The overview also overgeneralises: all countries rise overall, but the graph includes fluctuations, and the statement that Korea was the lowest is not qualified by period. The response contains 88 words, below the required 150, which contributes to the very limited coverage. To improve, include an overview of the range and contrasting trends, then select key figures for several countries, including Korea and the other higher-rate countries.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic, recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph giving details about the USA. This makes the limited information reasonably easy to follow. However, there is little progression beyond that single-country account, and the overview is not developed into comparisons across the graph. The link between the general claim that all countries increased and the subsequent USA-only detail is therefore weak. Some sentence boundaries also make the final data description difficult to process, particularly the comma splice in “This figure steadily rose to 50% in 1990 and above 70% by 2010, it is estimated to peak…”. Organise the body by contrasting groups or countries and use clear transitions to connect the overview with selected evidence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “overweight rates,” “marginal fluctuations,” “steadily rose,” and “estimated to peak.” These choices show an attempt to describe trends rather than simply list figures. However, the range is limited, and several spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable: “throught,” “pero[id],” “coutries,” and “the far high overweight rate” reduce accuracy and naturalness. “Give time” is also an unsuitable phrase for the period shown. Use precise comparative language such as “the highest proportion,” “remained comparatively low,” and “increased from…to…”; check spelling carefully and avoid repeating “figure” when describing multiple data points.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes a few simple and more extended sentence forms, and the opening sentence and overview are mostly understandable. However, grammatical control is uneven. In “In 1970, USA accounted,” the article is missing; “USA remained high” needs a clearer grammatical reference to its rate or proportion. The final sentence joins two independent clauses with a comma, and “it is estimated to peak” has an unclear subject. The phrase “all selected OECD countries increased” also omits what increased. These issues make some relationships between the data less clear. Improve accuracy by using complete subjects and articles, and separate linked data statements with a full stop or a suitable conjunction. Vary sentence structures while keeping each comparison grammatically complete.
