Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response identifies the broad pattern of rising overweight rates and correctly notes that the USA finishes above 70%, while France and Korea remain comparatively low. It also gives some relevant figures for England, Canada and Korea. However, the report is incomplete: it ends mid-sentence at “Spain recorded above 40%,” leaving Spain and several other countries without a meaningful account. Some details are imprecise, such as saying Canada and Korea “started” just before 2000, although their first plotted points occur in different years. The overview also overstates USA and Canada as dominant, since England is close to the USA by the end. The response is four words below the required minimum. Develop the overview and cover the main trends across all countries.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic structure: an introduction, an overview and paragraphs beginning with country-specific details. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Commencing with” and “Furthermore” help signal stages in the report. However, progression is limited because the final paragraph is cut off, and the body moves between countries without a clear grouping or consistent comparison. The phrase “Subsequently, Canada and Korea” does not clearly explain how these series relate to the preceding discussion, while “Furthermore” introduces an unfinished point rather than a developed comparison. Organise the body into logical groups—for example, the highest and middle rates, then the lower-rate countries—and use clear references to connect comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses some task-relevant vocabulary, including “gradual increase,” “minor drop,” “surged,” “fluctuation” and “projection,” showing an adequate range for describing trends. Some choices are imprecise or unnatural, however: “overweight individuals proportion” and “expected endings” are not idiomatic descriptions of the data, and “each state” is unsuitable for countries. “Dominates” is also an awkward way to describe rates and is not supported by the comparison with England near the end. These choices sometimes make the intended meaning less clear. Prefer precise chart language such as “the proportion of people who were overweight,” “ended at,” and “had the highest rates,” and check that each trend verb matches the line.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes both simple statements and some longer structures, such as “Overall, it is clear that…” and “In contrast France and Korea remained at lower levels.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in sentence construction and punctuation are noticeable. For example, “Each state showed gradual increase in percentage” is missing an article, and “England accounted for about 48% in 1990, with minor fluctuation till end period made up 59%” has an unclear, faulty clause structure. The opening sentence also uses an awkward parenthetical construction, “past, present and future (depiction).” Commas are missing after introductory phrases and between country names in the list. Use complete, controlled clauses and check articles, agreement, and punctuation when combining trends.
