Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the broad pattern that the USA had the highest rate and Korea the lowest, and you report several relevant figures, including the USA’s rise to about 75% and Korea’s increase to around 35%. However, the response only partially summarises the graph: most of the other countries are grouped together rather than compared, and the overview does not clearly distinguish their different levels or trends. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: Korea is shown at about 25% in 1998, not 30% in 2000, and Spain’s starting point is around 43% in 1987 rather than 1990. The final claim about all nine countries increasing is too broad, since the USA initially declined and some series fluctuate. Select and compare the main patterns more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is an attempt to organise the response into an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing selected countries. This gives the reader some sense of the task’s structure. However, progression is not consistently clear: the final paragraph begins “In contrast” without establishing a clear contrast, and the conclusion repeats a general claim rather than adding a useful summary. Linking expressions such as “while,” “followed by,” and “after” are sometimes used inaccurately or mechanically, making relationships between figures difficult to follow. Several long sentences combine multiple countries and time points without clear boundaries. Group the countries by meaningful patterns, use one main comparison per sentence, and ensure each paragraph has a distinct purpose.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant graph vocabulary, including “proportion,” “increased,” “decline,” and “fluctuate,” and you attempt to describe peaks and trends. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to interpret. For example, “proportion plump” is not an appropriate way to describe the data, and “the nine democratic countries” misidentifies the countries’ relevance to the graph. Spelling errors such as “graps,” “slightily,” “countinusly,” and “opproxmitaly” also reduce clarity. Use precise terms such as “overweight rate” or “proportion of the population classified as overweight,” and check spelling and natural combinations of words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts some longer sentences using clauses and linking words, but control is weak: complex sentences are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the account difficult to follow. Examples include “it grow over the time frame,” “the USA was started at 46%,” and “the other seven countries the percentage … was increased,” which show problems with tense, passive forms, and sentence construction. Articles and agreement are also inconsistent, as in “the Korea was counted at the lowest the proportion.” Punctuation and capitalisation are unreliable, particularly where a full stop is followed by a lowercase “after.” Practise accurate past-tense descriptions and build shorter, complete sentences before combining them with subordinate clauses.
