Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line graph illustrates the proportion overweight before, now, and in future across OECD nations from 1970 to 2020.

Overall, all countries followed upward trend during the time period, whereas the highest overweight ratio recorded in the USA. However, Korea experiened the lowest proportion of overweight.

In 1970, the overweight rates stood at almost 45%, it drop slightly in 1980, and it then rose gradually to nearly 75% by 2020,while England, Australia, Canada, and Spain started at under 50%, almost 33%, approximately 50%, and nearly 45%

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the graph’s subject and give a broad overview that the USA is highest and Korea lowest, both relevant main features. However, the response addresses the task only minimally: it ends partway through a comparison, gives no complete account of the other countries, and does not report enough key trends or comparisons. The statement that all countries rose is broadly supported by the chart, but it needs qualification and evidence; for example, the USA dips slightly before rising, while several series fluctuate. The USA figures are mostly represented accurately, though the final value is described as nearly 75%. The response is also 64 words below the required minimum, which leaves the summary substantially incomplete. Develop a full overview and select several clear comparisons across the period.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and then an attempt to describe figures. The linking words “Overall,” “However,” and “then” show some awareness of how to connect information. However, the response does not progress to a complete, clearly organised summary. The final sentence stops after listing starting rates and has no concluding comparison or follow-up, so the reader cannot see how those countries changed. The contrast introduced by “However” is also not especially clear, since Korea’s low rate does not directly oppose the general upward trend. Organise the body into logical groups—for example, the highest-rate countries and the lower-rate countries—and use complete sentences to show how their trends compare.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the general topic, with relevant terms such as “proportion,” “overweight rates,” “upward trend,” and “gradually.” There is also some variation in how figures are approximated, including “almost,” “nearly,” and “approximately.” However, the range is limited in this short response, and some choices are imprecise or awkward: “overweight ratio” is less suitable than “proportion” or “rate,” and “started at under 50%” is vague when describing several countries. There is also a spelling error in “experiened.” Use precise trend language and country-specific comparisons, such as “rose steadily,” “remained comparatively low,” or “increased from … to …,” while checking spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, including the overview clause beginning “Overall” and the sequence “it then rose gradually.” However, the range remains limited, and errors in verb forms and sentence construction are noticeable. In “it drop slightly,” the past-tense verb should be “dropped”; “all countries followed upward trend” needs an article (“an upward trend”); and “the highest overweight ratio recorded” is missing a verb, such as “was recorded.” The final sentence is incomplete, ending with “nearly 45%” without completing the comparison. Punctuation also needs attention: there should be a space after the comma in “2020,while.” Practise complete past-tense sentences and check each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
