Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line graph illustrates the past, present as well as future predicted overweight rates in nine different countries of the world.

As we can clearly see from the line graph the rates in almost all the countries kept on rising continuosly. For example, In America, the rates experience a tiny dip in the start but with the time it kept on rising. Same goes for Canada as well who also experience a small dip in the starting but after some years it also kept on increasing.

Other countries like England had experienced a rise almost after every 10 years. Although italy experience a rise in the starting but they were steady on approximately for 38 percent over 10 years. Korean overweight rates is also as same as Italy it was quite steady in the time duration of 2000 to 2010. France, Australia, Austria and sapin's overweight rates were also twingling throughout the years.

We can predict from the line graph that the rates will keep on rising in the future as well. Because we have not seen a single country where the percentage of rate decreased till now e.g, USA started from 30 45 percent and now has a overweight rate of almost 75 percent.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the broad upward trend and mention several countries, but the response reports the graph only minimally and often inaccurately. The claim that rates rose in “almost all” countries is broadly supported, yet the description of Canada as having a dip is not: its rate fluctuates slightly before rising overall. The statement that Italy stayed near 38% for ten years is also imprecise, and the USA did not start at 30%; it began at about 45%, dipped slightly, and then climbed. The overview is limited to general increases and does not clearly compare the highest and lowest rates or distinguish the countries’ different levels. Select key figures and make accurate comparisons to develop the summary more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, two paragraphs describing trends, and a concluding prediction. This gives the reader some organisation, and examples such as “For example” and “Other countries” signal movement between points. However, the progression is not consistently clear because countries are grouped without a clear comparison or organising principle, and several statements are vague, such as “were also twinkling throughout the years.” The final paragraph repeats the general prediction rather than drawing together the main comparisons. Use paragraphs to group countries by level or trend, and connect each comparison explicitly; this would make the sequence easier to follow and reduce reliance on broad transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “rates,” “percentage,” “dip,” “steady,” and “rising,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or informal for describing data. “Twinkling” does not convey fluctuation, while “kept on rising continuously” is repetitive. Phrases such as “in the starting” and “with the time” are unnatural, and “overweight rate” is repeated where more precise alternatives could help. Spelling errors, including “continuosly,” “sapin’s,” and “italy,” also reduce accuracy. Build a small set of precise trend verbs and comparison phrases, and check spelling and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response includes simple sentences and some attempts at longer structures, such as “Although Italy experience a rise in the starting but they were steady…”. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts awkward or unclear. Examples include subject–verb agreement in “the rates experience” and “Korean overweight rates is,” tense inconsistency in “had experienced” and “experience,” and the incorrect construction “Although … but.” Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “has a overweight rate” and the comma splice in “USA started from 30 45 percent and now has…”. Practise accurate past-tense reporting, agreement, and sentence joining, then proofread each sentence for one clear grammatical structure.
