Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The line graph illustrates past and current overweight rates, as well as in future projected rate in nine countries (USA, Canada, Spain, England, Austria, Italy, France, Korea and Australia) over the period from 1970 to 2020.
Overall, it is evident that USA shows soared over the year, while England also increased time to time. In addition, the Korea projected of overweight rates shows very low in all the countries.
At the beginning of the period, the USA, England and Australia stood at 45, 46 and 39 percent, compared with 50, 37 and 30 percent for Canada, Italy and France. The figure for USA, England and Australia then rose to 75, 70 and 65 percent in year 2020, before they shows some fluctuation in between years. Meanwhile, Canada, Italy and France followed a similar pattern, they show 55, 45 and 45 percent by these countries.
Turning to Spain, Australia and Korea, initially Spain and Austria record 39 and 33 percent. This figure subsequently increased to 55 and 45, reaching a peak in 2020. By the end of the period, Korea was at 25 percent in 1997 and reached at 35 percent in 2020.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response identifies the general subject and includes an overview, but it only partially reports the graph’s main features. The claim that the USA rose from 45% to 75% is broadly close to the chart’s 45% to about 74%, and Korea is correctly identified as the lowest series. However, several comparisons are inaccurate or confused: England begins around 47%, not 46%, and Australia begins around 34%, not 39%; the opening figures for Canada and France are also not supported by the graph. The account mixes Spain with Austria and gives Austria’s initial figure as Spain’s. The overview also says England increased “time to time” without clearly summarising the overall pattern. Select a few accurate comparisons and describe the overall rise across countries more clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs. It also uses basic signposts such as “Overall,” “Meanwhile” and “Turning to,” which help indicate shifts between groups. However, the progression is difficult to follow because countries are grouped inconsistently and sometimes confused—for example, the final paragraph begins with Spain, Australia and Korea, then discusses Spain and Austria. Some sentences join unrelated information or lack clear links, as in “Meanwhile, Canada, Italy and France followed a similar pattern, they show…”. Use paragraphs organised around clear comparisons, keep each country’s figures together, and use linking words to show whether figures are being contrasted or described as a group.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the topic, with relevant terms such as “overweight rates,” “period,” “increased” and “fluctuation.” There are also attempts to use more descriptive language, including “stood at” and “reaching a peak.” However, several word choices or combinations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “shows soared,” “increased time to time” and “the Korea projected of overweight rates.” Repetition of “figure” and “increased” also limits variety, while unclear phrasing sometimes makes the intended trend harder to understand. Aim for accurate, conventional graph language and use a small range of precise verbs, such as “rose,” “climbed,” “remained” and “levelled off,” only where the data supports them.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, including a comparison introduced by “while” and a time clause beginning “before.” However, errors are frequent, and some sentences are difficult to interpret. Examples include “USA shows soared over the year,” “the Korea projected … shows very low,” and “they show 55, 45 and 45 percent by these countries.” Verb forms and agreement are often inaccurate, and several clauses are joined without suitable punctuation, as in “followed a similar pattern, they show…”. Articles and prepositions are also inconsistently handled. Practise building clear past-tense sentences for historical data and use a consistent structure such as “The rate in X rose from … to …” before attempting longer comparisons.
