Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line graph shares the proportion of overweight people from 9 different countries in between 1970 and 2020, all the countries are OECD countries, graph also shows the future prediction of this overweight problem to be increased.

The USA shares the large proportion among other countries with 45% of overweight people in 1970 and is rapidly increasing and future prediction indicates this problem will continue to rise an d in 2029 it almost reached the massive shares of 75%, On the other hand, England starting from 1990 had also the same as that of USA with 45% of people however is also increasing but we are seeing a bit of curve in the line graph with reaching up to 70% in 2020 relatively lower then USA, Canada starting from 1990, initially was constant with proportion of shares but later started to increase up to 55% in 2020 and may continue to rise, Spain starting from mid 80s had a % of just above 40% later started to increase but only in 2000s showed a dip in the percentage but in 2020 it also reached to 55%.

Austria, mainly in 1990 was at just below 40% had a showed a constant speed till 2020 then started to increase, Italy showed a zig-zag increased in 1996 from 35% to 45% in 2020, France started from 30% in 1990 and hen to 43% almost in 2020 Korea in 2020 was atleast in the graph as shown to 15% to 35% in 2020, Lastly, Australia in 1990 was at just above 30% showed rapidly increased in 2010 and then in 2020 to 45%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the broad pattern of rising overweight rates and include all nine countries, with some useful comparisons, such as the USA remaining above England and Canada reaching about 55% by 2020. However, the overview is not clearly separated or sufficiently precise, and several figures or trends are inaccurate. The USA’s projected endpoint is around 74% in 2020, not 2029; Australia reaches about 64%, not 45%; and Korea rises from roughly 25% to 35%, rather than from 15%. Austria does not show a steady rise throughout, and Italy’s increase is not accurately described as a zig-zag from 35%. Select the main highs, lows and overall trends, then check each reported figure against the graph.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has some organisation: it begins with an introduction, groups several countries in the next paragraph, and discusses the remaining countries afterwards. However, the progression is difficult to follow because many separate series are packed into long sentences, especially the paragraph beginning “The USA shares the large proportion.” Linking phrases such as “On the other hand,” “however” and “Lastly” are used, but they do not always clarify the relationship between the data. The final paragraph also moves rapidly from Austria to Australia without a clear grouping principle. Use a distinct overview and organise the details into logical groups, such as the highest-rate countries and the lower-rate countries, with shorter sentences and clearer references.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant graph vocabulary, including “proportion,” “increasing,” “constant,” “dip” and “reached,” so the reader can generally understand the topic. However, the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “shares the large proportion,” “massive shares,” “showed a zig-zag increased” and “constant speed.” Repetition of “started to increase” also makes the description less precise. Choose standard collocations for describing data, and distinguish between a rate, a proportion and a trend. More accurate verbs such as “rose,” “remained stable,” “fluctuated” and “stood at” would make the account clearer and more appropriate to an academic report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

There are attempts to combine ideas using clauses and contrast, but many sentences are long and contain frequent errors that sometimes make the relationships between ideas unclear. For example, the opening sentence joins several independent clauses without suitable punctuation, while “Austria … had a showed” contains an incorrect verb construction. Tense and sentence boundaries are also inconsistent in passages such as “England starting from 1990 had also the same as that of USA … however is also increasing.” Use past tense for historical data and future or projected language only where appropriate, and divide country descriptions into complete sentences. Check subject–verb structure, articles and punctuation when editing; these changes would make your meaning easier to follow.
