Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The line graph illustrates the comparison of past, present and planned future outweight rates among different OECD countrires.
Overall, It can be seen that the USA and England had the hightest outweight rates in past, and future, whereas Austria, Itally ,Korea and France had the lowest outweight rates at a proportion of below 50%.
To begin with, The USA had a dramatic increase from 1970s to 2020 and remained the dominant, followed by England and Australia with a consistant increase throughout the years. Canada and spain had below 50% in 1990s with a little fluctuation but both countries ended with above 50% in 2020.
On the other hand, Austria has steady increase in weightout rates along with Italy and France ended at almost the same Proportion in 2020 at about 45%.The interesting point is that Corea had no weightweight rate till 2000 and after thatnshowed a steady in increase but still finished below 40%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad pattern of rising rates and give an overview that contrasts the USA and England with countries below 50%. However, the overview is not fully accurate: Austria, Italy, France and Korea are below 50% at the end, but the USA and England are not the only countries with high rates, and Australia also finishes relatively high at about 64%. Some details are misreported or unclear: Canada and Spain do not both begin below 50% in the 1990s, and Korea did not have no overweight rate until 2000; its recorded rate was about 25% in 1998. The comparison of Italy and France ending at about 45% is broadly sound. Select key figures more precisely and distinguish starting levels from final levels.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs grouping countries. This helps the reader follow the main direction of the report, and phrases such as “To begin with” and “On the other hand” signal a shift. However, the grouping and progression are not always clear. The final paragraph combines Austria, Italy and France in a sentence whose relationships are difficult to follow, while the Korea point is added abruptly. Some linking phrases also imply a contrast that is not fully developed. Use clearer topic sentences and organise the details consistently—for example, higher-rate countries first, then lower-rate countries—while making each comparison explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “dramatic increase,” “fluctuation,” “steady increase” and “proportion,” so the reader can understand the general subject. However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “outweight,” “hightest,” “consistant,” “Itally” and “Corea.” The repeated use of “increase” and “rates” also makes the description less varied. Some expressions are awkward or unclear, such as “dominant” for the highest rate and “no weightweight rate.” Aim for accurate chart language and collocations, such as “the highest proportion,” “rose steadily,” and “remained below 40%.” Proofreading country names and key terms would also improve clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “whereas” and a sentence beginning “The interesting point is that…”. The main trends are generally understandable, but grammatical control is uneven. For example, “Austria has steady increase … along with Italy and France ended” combines incompatible sentence structures, and “both countries ended with above 50%” uses an awkward construction. Tense shifts between past and present are also inconsistent, as in “Austria has” alongside descriptions of completed trends. Capitalisation and punctuation are unreliable, with unnecessary capitals after commas and missing spaces. Build shorter, complete sentences first, then check tense consistency, articles and sentence boundaries.
