Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph depicts rate of overweight in the nine different nations in the past decades and upcoming future.

Overall, the picture shows that USA has the highest proportion of overweight citizens among all the countries, while korea has the smallest margin line as compare to all other countries.

The USA begins as the clear leader, with its overweight population rising from approximately 40% to 80%. Following a similar trend, England and Spain show steady increases. England's rate climbs significantly 40% to 70%,overtaking Spain to reach an anticipated peak of roughly65%. Canada also shows a steady, marked growth with the high rates in England and Spain bt the end of the projection period.

In contrast, countries like Austria, Australia, Italy, and France cluster within a lowerbracket, grenerally ranging between 35% to 55%. while Australiaand France display morderate, gradual increases over time, Austria shows a slight fluctuation before stablizing. Korea remains a distinct outlier throughout the entire timeframe.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You provide an overview that identifies the USA as highest and Korea as lowest, and you select several relevant country trends. However, some key figures and comparisons do not match the graph: the USA rises from about 45% to 74%, not 40% to 80%, and England reaches about 69%, while Spain ends near 55%. The statement that England reaches an anticipated peak of roughly 65% is therefore inaccurate, and the description of Canada as showing “steady, marked growth” overlooks its slight early decline and relatively modest overall rise. The lower-country grouping is also too broad: Australia reaches about 64%, so it does not remain in the 35–55% bracket. More precise reporting of the main differences would make the summary more complete and reliable.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a general overview, and two paragraphs comparing groups of countries. This gives the reader a coherent route through the information, and phrases such as “Overall” and “In contrast” help signal the structure. However, the grouping in the final paragraph is not fully logical because Australia is placed with countries that remain at lower rates, despite its substantial rise. Some links between comparisons are also unclear, particularly “Canada also shows a steady, marked growth with the high rates in England and Spain.” The paragraphing is useful, but clearer grouping by actual trends and more precise connections between countries would strengthen progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “rising,” “steady increases,” “fluctuation,” and “outlier.” These choices help communicate the broad trends. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “smallest margin line,” “clear leader” for a rate, and “with the high rates in England and Spain.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including “grenerally,” “morderate,” “stablizing,” and “lowerbracket,” which reduce the polish of the report. Aim for precise chart language and check spelling carefully; for example, describe Korea as having the lowest proportion and say that rates “rose” or “remained” at particular levels.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including the contrast structure “while Australia and France display…, Austria shows…”. Most of the main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are evident. In “England's rate climbs significantly 40% to 70%,” the comparison needs a preposition (“from … to …”), and “as compare to” should be formed as “compared with.” The sentence about Canada is also structurally unclear, making the relationship between its trend and the other countries difficult to follow. Missing spaces after punctuation and inconsistent capitalisation, as in “70%,overtaking” and “korea,” further affect accuracy. More careful sentence construction and proofreading would improve control.
