Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The line illustrates past, pervious and estimated future overweight rates in nine selected countries OECD countries between 1970 and 2020.
Overall, the ratio of overweight people raised in all nine OECD countries over the period. The USA recorded the highest figures, while korea had the lowest rates among the countries shown. Most countries are also projected to experience further increase.
Fist and foremost, USA and Canada, the overweight rate in the United State stood approximately 45% in 1970 before falling slightly to around 43% in 1978. After that, it rose steadily , reaching about 60% in 1998 and approximately 75% by 2019. However, Canada experienced a significant increase, from around 50% in the early 1990 to nearly 70% in 2019. England also showed an uoward trend with its figure rising approximtely 42% in 1980 to around 57% at the end of the period.
Apart from that, Spain rate increased significantly from around 43% in 1980, and 55% in 2019. Also Austria and France also experienced overall growth, ending at around 45% and 47% in 2019. Italy showed some fluctuations and finished at approximately 48%. Finally, korea had the lowest rate, rising from about 28% to 29% around 1998 to roughly 36% by 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You provide a relevant overview, identifying the USA as having the highest rates and Korea the lowest, and you note the general upward direction. Several country trends are also selected for comparison. However, some key details are inaccurate: Canada rises only from about 50% to 55%, not nearly 70%, and England begins around 47% in the early 1990s rather than 42% in 1980. The USA’s later figures are broadly close, though the rise to about 75% is projected for 2020. The overview also says all countries rose, which is broadly true overall, but the response could better distinguish the leading and lower-rate groups and accurately report the projected endpoint. More precise selection and reporting of chart evidence would strengthen coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs grouping countries. This makes the main direction of the report easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “After that,” and “Finally” help signal progression, although some transitions are mechanical or repetitive, particularly “Apart from that” and “Also … also.” The grouping in the first detail paragraph is not fully effective because it moves from the USA and Canada to England while the Canada comparison is inaccurate, making the sequence less clear. Improve cohesion by grouping countries with similar rates or trends and using references that clearly identify the relevant series. The paragraph structure is coherent, but links between comparisons could be smoother and more purposeful.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “estimated future,” “recorded the highest figures,” “rose steadily,” “fluctuations,” and “overall growth.” These choices generally communicate the intended trends. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “pervious,” “Fist,” “uoward,” and “approximtely.” Some phrasing is also awkward or repetitive, such as “nine selected countries OECD countries” and “Also Austria and France also.” Use standard chart language consistently—for example, “proportion” or “percentage,” “increased,” and “declined slightly”—and check spelling carefully. More accurate collocations and less repetition would make the description clearer and more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple statements and some longer structures, and the overall meaning is usually understandable. The overview and several trend sentences are formed clearly, such as “The USA recorded the highest figures, while korea had the lowest rates.” However, some sentence patterns contain grammatical problems. For example, “the ratio of overweight people raised” needs a passive or intransitive form such as “the proportion … rose,” while “from around 43% in 1980 to around 57%” lacks a clear verb in the England sentence. The opening also has an awkward repeated noun phrase, and punctuation spacing is inconsistent. Work on accurate verb forms, complete comparison structures, and sentence editing; these improvements would allow your range of structures to be expressed more reliably.
