Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The line graph illustrates the past and current overweight rates, also a projected future overweight rate in nine selected countries that are; USA, England, Canada, Spain, Austria, Itly, Korea, France and Australia.
Overall, the beginning of proportion overweight rates started from USA after the year 1970 and the rates kept on increasing significantly throughout the years. Korea was the last one to enter in this line graph before 2000 and also it has the lowest rate.
Before 1980, USA has proportion overweight rate of more than 40% and it reached to more than 70% in 2020. Followed by Austria, somewhere between 1980 amd 1990 with a rate of a little less than 40% and it has the maximum rate of less than 50% a little similar to Itly and France. Furthermore, England has the second highest rate of 70% in 2020. While Australia started from 40% before 1990 and it has reached to more than 60% in 2020.
On the other hand, proportion overweight rate of Spain rose significantly with a dramatic decline after 2000, it continued to rise and it has the highest rate of less than 60% in 2000. The highest rate of korean proportion overweight is less than 30% which is the least rate in comparison to the rates of other countries in the line graph.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the countries and report several broad features, including the USA’s rise to about 74% and Korea’s position as the lowest series. However, the overview is unclear: “the beginning of proportion overweight rates started from USA” does not clearly summarise the overall pattern, and the claim that rates increased significantly throughout is too broad. Several details are inaccurate or confusing. Austria does not have a rate “a little less than 50%” as a maximum comparable with Italy and France; its final value is around 46–47%, while Italy and France finish at about 45% and 44%. Spain does not have its highest rate below 60% in 2000, and its decline after 2000 is not dramatic. Select and compare the main trends more accurately, including the high rates in the USA and England and the lower rates in Korea and France.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has an opening, an overview-like paragraph, and two detail paragraphs, so there is some attempt to organise the information. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the overview does not establish a clear comparison, and the later paragraphs move between countries without a consistent grouping or timeline. Connectors such as “Followed by,” “Furthermore,” and “On the other hand” are sometimes used inaccurately or do not show a clear relationship between the figures. For example, the Spain sentence combines a rise, a decline, and a later rise without making the sequence clear. Group countries by similar levels or trends, and use linking phrases only when they accurately express contrast, sequence, or addition.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “rate,” “increasing,” and “decline,” and the country names make the subject clear. However, the range is limited and several phrases are unnatural or imprecise, such as “the beginning of proportion overweight rates started from USA” and “the highest rate of korean proportion overweight.” Repetition of “rate” and “highest” also makes comparisons less clear. There are spelling errors in “Itly” and “amd,” and “dramatic decline” overstates the relatively modest fluctuation shown for Spain. Aim for accurate collocations such as “the proportion of people who were overweight” and use precise trend language. These improvements would make the description easier to understand.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts longer sentences and uses some past and present forms, but control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to understand. For example, “the rates kept on increasing significantly throughout the years” does not fit all the series, while “it has the maximum rate” shifts tense and has an unclear reference. The opening phrase “countries that are;” uses punctuation incorrectly, and several sentences join multiple ideas without clear grammatical structure, particularly the sentence about Spain. Practise forming clear comparison sentences with accurate subjects and verbs, and keep tense consistent when describing historical data and projections. Shorter, well-controlled sentences would help communicate the figures more reliably.
