Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies two relevant overall features: the USA is described as having the highest rate and Korea the lowest, and it notes that the US figure is expected to rise. However, the report is extremely incomplete: it stops after “In 1970, USA represented 45%” and gives no meaningful account of the other countries, changes over time, or comparisons. The overview also overstates the US position across the whole period, since England is close to or above the US in some later years, although the USA has the highest projected endpoint. The response contains only 70 words, well below the required 150, which leaves the task addressed only minimally. Develop the overview and support it with several accurate comparisons and key figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic, understandable sequence: an introduction is followed by an overview and the beginning of a detail paragraph. The use of “Overall” signals the overview clearly, and “whereas” attempts to contrast the USA and Korea. However, the response ends abruptly after a single unfinished detail, so there is no progression through the graph or conclusion to the description. The paragraphing is also too limited to organise the main trends and comparisons. To improve, group the countries or trends into logical paragraphs, then use clear links such as “By contrast” and “Meanwhile” to guide the reader through the data. Ensure each paragraph develops a complete point rather than stopping mid-report.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses some appropriate task vocabulary, including “proportion,” “projected,” “rate,” and “OECD countries,” and these choices make the topic clear. There is also an attempt to vary wording with “figures” and “proportion.” However, several expressions are awkward or inaccurate: “recorded the highest figures for the country with most overweight persons” is cumbersome, while “accounted for the lowest proportion of overweight individuals” would be more natural as “had the lowest proportion of people who were overweight.” Spelling errors in “United states,” “indiciduals,” and “amoung” also weaken control. Use concise, precise trend language such as “rose,” “remained,” and “was projected to reach,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts a complex overview sentence using “whereas,” and the opening sentence is a clear, complete statement. These show some ability to combine ideas, but the range is limited in this very short sample. There are errors in sentence construction and articles: “recorded the highest figures for the country with most overweight persons” has an unclear grammatical relationship, and “United states” needs an article and correct capitalisation (“the United States”). The final line, “In 1970, USA represented 45%,” is incomplete as a report and lacks the article before “USA.” Aim for complete, controlled sentences, for example: “The United States stood at about 45% in 1972, before rising to a projected 74% in 2020.”
