Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response identifies a few relevant features, including the USA as the highest and Korea as the lowest, and attempts comparisons among countries. However, several details do not match the graph: the USA’s figure in 1987 is not given (it is about 50% around 1990), and Australia was not the lowest in 1987; its series begins in 1990. The response also gives Spain’s 1990 figure even though the plotted series begins later, and describes the USA as highest in 2010 without reporting the broad upward pattern across most countries. There is no clear, accurate overview of the main trends. The response is 128 words, below the required 150, which limits coverage further. Develop a concise overview and select accurate comparisons from the chart.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic sequence from an opening statement to comparisons at different dates, and words such as “while” and “However” show an attempt to connect ideas. Nevertheless, the response has no clear paragraphing or progression from an overview to supporting details. The country comparisons are difficult to follow because dates and figures are introduced without a consistent structure, and the final sentence does not clearly connect Korea’s trend to the earlier points. Repeated phrasing such as “past and projected future overweight rate” also makes the flow cumbersome. Organise the report into an introduction, an overview, and one or two paragraphs grouping the countries or trends; use clear time references and linking phrases to guide the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “overweight rate,” “highest,” “lowest,” “steadily increasing,” and “position,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, such as “past and future overweight rate” and “behind all over the given countries.” Some word choices are awkward for describing a graph, including “in 2nd position” and “below to America.” Spelling errors such as “remaind” and inconsistent capitalisation of “korea” also reduce accuracy. Use more precise reporting language, for example “proportion,” “stood at,” “rose,” and “ranked lowest,” while varying repeated phrases and checking spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response communicates its general meaning through mostly simple statements and makes an attempt at a longer contrast with “while.” However, grammatical control is inconsistent: “USA past and projected future overweight rate in 1987 was” lacks a possessive or article and has an unclear time reference, while “which steadily increasing” is missing a verb form. There are also errors in articles and sentence construction, as in “the Korea had the lowest overweight,” and punctuation is weak, with missing spaces after commas and long sentences joined without clear control. The limited range means that comparisons are not expressed reliably. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and comparative clauses, and use complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs.
