Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The multi-lines chart indicates the past, predicted future percentage of overweight people in nine different nations recorded throughout 10-year intervals from 1970 to 2020.
Overall, the USA, as one of the categories, experienced the highest rates in the proportion of obese dwellers at all, while the figure for Korea showed the lowest . Additionally, there was a common upward trend in all of countries, and the ranks remained for almost categories over the period.
First of all, In the USA, the overweight rate stood at nearly half, around 46 percent. During 1980s, in many countries, the percentage of overweight people started recording the fluctations of those, making up for from 30 percent to 40 percent. The figure for the USA kept rising dramatically throughout the 1980- 2020 period, despite a slight fall during 1970s.
From 1990 to 2000, Korea began the race with a mere 25 percent. 20 years later, the figure for the countries gradually increased more and more.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad pattern that rates generally rise and note that the USA is highest and Korea lowest, which are relevant overview points. However, the overview is not fully accurate: the USA is not highest at every point shown, and the claim that rankings remained similar is unsupported by the changing positions of countries. The report gives very little coverage of the other seven countries and includes only a few figures. Some details are also unclear, such as the statement that Korea “began the race” from 1990 to 2000, when its series starts in 1998 at about 25%. To strengthen the response, select key comparisons across the countries and describe their changes accurately, including the USA’s rise and the lower rates in Korea and France.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure, with an introduction, an overview and two body paragraphs, and expressions such as “Overall,” “Additionally” and “From 1990 to 2000” signal some relationships between ideas. However, the progression is limited: the first body paragraph moves from the USA to vague comments about “many countries,” while the final paragraph shifts to Korea and ends without a clear comparison or conclusion. References such as “the figure for the countries” are unclear, and the sequence of information does not consistently group countries or periods. Organise the body around meaningful comparisons—for example, the highest-rising countries and those with lower rates—and use linking phrases to make those comparisons explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “proportion,” “upward trend,” “percentage” and “slight fall,” and the reader can generally understand the topic. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “multi-lines chart,” “obese dwellers,” “the race,” and “making up for from” do not describe the data naturally. “Fluctations” is also misspelled, and “ranks remained for almost categories” is difficult to interpret. Aim for standard graph language and accurate collocations, such as “the line graph,” “the proportion of people who were overweight,” and “the rate rose.” This would make your descriptions clearer without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple and longer sentences, including a complex sentence beginning “Additionally, there was a common upward trend…”. However, errors occur frequently and sometimes make relationships difficult to follow. For example, “the ranks remained for almost categories” lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “During 1980s” is missing an article and “the percentage … started recording” uses an unsuitable construction. There are also punctuation and capitalisation problems, such as “First of all, In the USA” and the space before the full stop after “lowest”. Practise building clear subject–verb sentences to report trends, and check articles, agreement and punctuation when editing.
