Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response identifies the graph’s general subject and gives one broadly relevant trend: the USA rises after an initial dip. However, it does not provide a meaningful overview of the nine countries or compare their patterns, and the claim that Canada “experienced a decline” is inaccurate overall: its rate ends higher than it begins. The figures given for the USA are only partly reported, with no endpoint or comparison to other countries. The response also falls substantially short of the required 150 words, leaving most key features and supporting data unreported. To improve, summarise the main contrasts—for example, the USA has the highest projected rate, while Korea remains lowest—and support these with selected figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, and a short detail statement. The sequence is understandable, and “Overall” signals the overview. However, the response is too brief to establish a clear progression through the graph, and the final paragraph does not develop the overview or move on to other countries. The sentence beginning “In 1970” also joins several ideas without clear punctuation, making the relationship between the initial fall and subsequent rise less smooth. Organise the report into a concise overview followed by grouped comparisons, such as the highest-rising countries and those with lower rates, and use linking phrases to show how the figures relate.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses relevant topic vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “rose steadily,” and “decline,” and the meaning is generally clear. However, the range is narrow and some phrasing is awkward or imprecise: “the past, current and the future projected overweight” is not a natural description of the graph, while “percentage overweight” is repeated. There is also a spelling error in “thoughout.” Use standard chart language such as “the proportion of people who were overweight” and vary trend descriptions with accurate terms such as “climbed,” “fell slightly,” or “levelled off.” Take care to choose descriptions that match the data, particularly when characterising Canada’s overall trend.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response shows some control of basic sentence forms, including a complex contrast with “whereas” and a time clause introduced by “In 1970.” However, the range is limited, and errors in sentence boundaries and punctuation reduce accuracy. In “In 1970, the percentage overweight was approximately 45% and it experienced a slight drop to around 42% subsequently, it increased significantly,” two independent clauses are joined with a comma, creating a run-on sentence. The introduction also needs clearer grammatical framing, and spacing after commas is inconsistent. Separate the trend stages into complete sentences or connect them with appropriate conjunctions, and check articles and punctuation when revising.
