Summarise the infonnation by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Past and projected future overweight rates in selected OECD countries
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The line graph illustrates past and current overweight rates, as well as projected future rates, in the USA, England, Canada, Spain, Austria, Italy, Australia, France, and Korea.
Overall, the proportion of overweight increased with the passage of time. Additionally, Korea recorded the lowest overweight rate throughout the period. In contrast, USA recorded the highest proportion. However Australia had a sudden increase in percentage.
In detail, it is clear that USA remained at the top from 1970 to 2020. After USA the England has highest figure from 1990 to 2020. spain started around 1985 and values drop for some time then again rose around 45% to 55% from 2000 to 2020. Italy recorded the steady figures from 1995 - 2020.
Meanwhile, france started from 1990, significantly lower than Italy and Australia and ended on 2020 with higher figures which reached to around 40%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the countries and give a broad overview, noting that rates generally rose and that Korea was lowest while the USA was highest. However, the overview is too general and some claims are inaccurate: the USA is not shown across the whole period, and Korea is not demonstrably the lowest throughout because its data begin later than several countries. The account also omits important comparisons, such as Australia’s rise from about 34% to 64% and the USA’s projected high of roughly 74%. Some details are unclear or incorrect, including Spain’s trend and Italy’s supposedly steady figures. The response is 134 words, below the 150-word minimum. Select key trends and support them with accurate comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs. This helps the reader identify the topic and the broad direction of change. However, progression within the detail is limited: the account moves from the USA to England, Spain, Italy, then France without a clear grouping or consistent comparison. Linking is also basic, with “Overall,” “In detail,” and “Meanwhile” doing most of the work, while “After USA” does not clearly connect the comparison. Organise the countries into meaningful groups, such as the highest and lowest rates or similar trends, and use references and transitions to show how each point relates to the previous one.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “proportion,” “rate,” “increased,” “steady,” and “significantly lower,” so the main subject is generally clear. However, the range is limited and some choices are imprecise or unnatural: “recorded the steady figures” does not clearly describe a trend, and “values drop for some time then again rose” is vague. There are also inconsistent country-name capitalisations, such as “spain” and “france.” Use more precise trend language and collocations, for example “fluctuated slightly,” “rose steadily,” or “remained broadly stable,” and describe the scale and timing of changes rather than relying on general terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You produce several understandable simple sentences and attempt some longer structures, such as “Additionally, Korea recorded the lowest overweight rate throughout the period.” However, grammatical control is uneven. Examples include “After USA the England has highest figure,” which has article and word-order problems, and “Italy recorded the steady figures,” where the sentence pattern is awkward. The sentence beginning “spain started” also needs a capital letter, and punctuation around the year ranges is inconsistent. These errors do not usually prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy and make some comparisons harder to follow. Practise accurate articles, past-tense reporting, and sentence patterns for comparing countries; then proofread capitals and punctuation.
